I have liked and continue to like all sorts of cheesy shit - songs from Disney films (soaring sentimental ballads about breaking free and following your dreams), Coldplay songs (''Clocks'', ''See You Soon''), that one Linkin Park tune (''Closer To The Edge'' I think its called)... what else? Loooooads of stuff.

I am a hardboiled cynic outwardly but I think that I've developed this as a sort of armour against the world, refusing to reveal openly my deeply squishy, strawberry flavoured core. I like music that makes me feel like crying, especially when its probably designed to make most people smile and dance. So pretty harmonies hit me below the emotional belt, no matter how chocolate box the lyrics or banal the instrumentation. This is why I like Mozart and some Coldplay stuff, even though Mozart is immeasurably superior.

Other stuff I think is just really well done crap. Like that Nickelback tune you posted - its cringeworthy and overwrought and a fifth-rate nirvana rip-off and all that, but its well written, melodically. There's a reason that song is huge and it isn't just ''people are stoopid''.

I won't even get into the issue of how self-criticism has rendered almost everything I like a guilty, or at least problematic, pleasure for me. F that right in the A.

ha yea, I think the majority of music I listen to is a guilty pleasure to some extent..except the stuff that would probably be considered a guilty pleasure, which I feel proud to like (unless it's possible that I am actually enjoying it "ironically" without realising then it goes full circle). Not that i'm going to take the risk of damaging my massive rep by mentioning any artists or tracks here. Actually nah fuck it Spice Girls are great, also was rinsing this the other day..

I really love that wimpy All Saints tune off 'The Beach' soundtrack, mainly I think cos it reminds me of being 19 in Thailand buying NOKE trainers off beach vendors.

i previously outed myself as digging some of lenny kravitz's fake rock action on another thread (i think we've had this discussion before, too lazy to search it out). furthermore, i will also admit to owning a number of monster magnet and white zombie albums, and have been know to enjoy the odd fatboy slim track.

Sometimes I wonder if my taste was more honest as a child, or just shitter.

Play ''I Want To Get Away'' by Kravitz to my eight year old self and I'd have been dancing on the sofas in my England pajamas.

Mind you my eight year old self also liked fucking ''Wiggle Wiggle'' by the Outhere brothers which was just bloody ignorant.

You can guiltily enjoy PARTS of tracks too, can't you? Like that awful Evanescence song ''Bring Me To Life'' - I actually like the bit after the first chorus when it all goes silent for a second and then the TOTALLY RAWKING guitar riff kicks in moments before the driving drums return to ignite the second verse like a flame to a stick of dynamite. Fucking hell, I'm getting chills down my neck just thinking of how RAWKING AWESOME that bit is.

Actually that reminds me - I secretly enjoy ''My Sacrifice'' by Creed everytime me and my friends watch the video in order to ridicule it.

Some things you can't bring yourself to like even if the song is good because you can't get past the irony surrounding it.

And then in other cases its because you've heard it before in shit cheese clubs and at weddings where middle aged people are failing to dance.

Depends WHICH Michael Jackson song - anything from before the time when he wasn't the colour of turkey slice is basically legit.

If I liked 'The Girl Is Mine' by MJ and PMcCart that WOULD be a guilty pleasure but luckily I just find it hilariously bad.

Actually, there's a point - Paul McCartney! I like this and I feel I shouldn't. McCartney's a cheesy fucker isn't he but a genius anyhooha.

OH! And Jamiroquai. On one level I know they're cheesy jazz-funk lite for deeply unhip middle management types but I love a lot of their tunes. Its just I'd never put them on at a party of my hip friends for fear of being tarred and feathered.

What do you think is the quality most disdained by music nerds like us? Melodrama/sentimentality/mawkishness perhaps. I think that would cover both soaring ballads and whiney emo shit.

Which is why you might get away with liking ''Wannabe'' or ''Say You'll Be There'' by the Spice Girls but not ''2 Become 1'', I suppose.

I feel like I attained a new level of music nerddom when I joined Dissensus cos when I was a dubstepforum nerd, for example, even liking R&B was taboo. And now its actually almost the opposite way around!

little guilt in this thread tbh

Nickleback and Linkin Park can be written off to teenages and likewise, the girlband stuff is just what you were thought to scorn. We would want to be hitting maroon five levels

I found out that the dude who produced Pornography by The Cure did Natalie Imbruglia's first solo album, and therefore used it as an excuse to defend why I think that record is a classic.

I also like Sneaker Pimps' first album better than Portishead's "Dummy" which I think is mostly crap, despite ADORING everything else the band's done. (Though "Waterbaby" is subliminally smarter than anything Beth wrote on "Dummy" anyway.)
