No, normally wait till right at the end of the year (or even later) but know other's usually have something in mind around this time.

lol

I refuse to engage with this until December, but the answer will be Jessy Lanza.

Really? I need to give that another listen.

Yup, by a mile, too. I really liked Last Exit by Junior Boys, and this is produced with one of them, but she's got a much more interesting voice and better songs. Also I'm getting old and my tastes are changing - I might not have loved this as much a few years ago.

I've always found JBs a bit fey. I liked this Lanza album, at least enough to still have the promo lying around, but obviously nothing like as much as you did.

Not sure what my favourites are: Disclosure is the one I played most for a month or so when it came out. Also the Steve Mason and Ghostface's 12 Reasons, but I think the album I've played most this year came out last year - and that's Goat's World Music. Best gig, too.

might make a longer list but these are my obvious favourite pop singles of the year off the top of my head. You can't knock 'em

Special shout out to THE CLAIRVOYANTS who's Rinse shows (R.I.P.) I really enjoyed this year. Grinding, hard, desolate techno. BANG BANG BANG.

Best Live/DJ Experience of 2013 = BRACKLES playing New Years Day party a Baskerville hall, rinsing out all those big jacking tunes from last year (Coke Diet/This Is The Way We Go), OFF MY FACE on gin and happiness. Honourable mention to PEVERELIST at Freerotation playing ''WE ARE IE'' alongside sick 2013 grime/dubstep stuff, almost managing to overcome my horrible paranoid comedown in the process.

TRENDS I enjoyed this year :

AUTOGOON - Future's influence on US rap was all over the place this year, and the trend for auto-tune goon rap produced a lot of absolute bangers. Its nice to hear some melodicism coming back into street rap after the dominance of Lex Luger style stripped-back trap. Rap is in a very interesting place at the moment, what with the explosion of cult figures like ASAP Rocky, Danny Brown and Kanye's continuing slide into artsy coke-addled meglomania.

HOUSE - The rise of Disclosure, Rudimental et al to the charts seems to me a good thing overall, despite my getting pretty bored with a 4X4 beat by this point. House is in rude health no matter how you look at it - the mainstream chart stuff, JACKIN' oop Midlands, 'Shuffling' stuff in London. Stuff like 'Imagine It Was Us' was perfect summer-fare, made this feel like a real 'moment' in the UK, even standing right at the periphery of it.

GRIME - Bubbling on the low there's all this instrumental grime coming out by ppl like BLOOM, RABIT, SLACKKK, MURLO etc. which is both interesting and ard and I will watch all this stuff with great interest in 2014. I do miss the MC element but the music is good enough to stand on its own so...

if you been listening to the radio you might have already heard this (produced by Ill Blu), but just in case. One of my faves of the year and a late contender

don't think she's had the attention she's deserved, but being on Black Butter is a good look - some of the producers from BB have been making tunes for her, like Kidnap Kid and apparently theres an album on the way. I'd been loving her singles 'Closer', 'Be safe' and 'Step by step' and was shocked when I found out she was from shields have to say! (complete with ridiculously strong accent).

Anyway I think she's fantastic. The new one is lush too

I occasionally tune into 1XTRA and often hear really great stuff that's obviously very popular but that I've never listened to. Its perhaps paradoxical that a lot of music nerds pay very little attention to the most popular music of the present day - precisely because they tend to be the sort of people who dig for quality, not expecting it served up on a platinum plate.

There's actually, I think, a particular thrill in enjoying a piece of music that you know is being enjoyed by millions of other people - not that this is earth shattering stuff, of course. Its very alienating when something is huge (''AU SEVE'') and you don't get it but when something is huge and you DO ("WHITE NOISE'') - I dunno, its heartwarming and exciting, somehow. I do wish there was something on a bigger scale that tapped into this feeling, these days - an entire musical scene/sound ala. rave, hip-hop, early rock - rather than certain individual tunes from time to time.

Anyway, I wanted to add to my list:

ODDLY EFFECTING MUSICAL EXPERIENCE OF THE YEAR

Playing GTAV, driving around a virtual city as the sun goes down and the neon lights switch on, listening to ''West End Girls'' by the Pet Shop Boys and sundry other tunes. I was stoned, it was great. Felt so futuristic, especially when playing to this Kuedo tune.
