Best Of 2013 Lists

"But why a new wave now? As Muggs and Finlayson (via Visionist) point out, younger producers have or could well have felt disillusioned with the often compromising path taken by grime's more successful acts. It's also the case that grime has had to compete for space and attention for a few years now."

and I pointed out in 2009. These articles totally skip history.

You read it and it was like Eskimo happened in 2003 and nothing interesting happened until 2013.

Been great music throughout just the form has changed so much as it should in 10 years to a point where the two scenes dont resemble each other at all.

I've been having a pretty good year for new music, although that might be partly just getting back into the habit of buying it again rather than it being inherently better.

Picks of the year, probably including a few things from late 2012 that I slept on:

Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest
Keysound comp
Livity Sound comp
Hladowski & Joynes - The Wild Wild Berry
Broadcast - Berberian Sound Studio OST
Vatican Shadow - Remember Your Black Day
Acid Mothers Temple - In Search of the Lost Divine Arc
Silent Servant Negative Fascination
Old Apparatus - Compendium

Gigs:
Acid Mothers Temple
Duane Pitre
Space-Time festival at Wysing
Half Man Half Biscuit

Saving a lot of my thoughts for a big end of year blogpost, but I thought it was a great year for music. There was definitely more stuff that I wanted to keep up with than I could, specifically not having enough time to keep up with all the US hip hop, footwork, and the 130/neo-grime stuff.

Unlike last year though, where I had a definite number 1 - You Want Me - which kind of ticked every single box for me - defining of a new genre, anthemic, great memories of running it/hearing it out, great memories of discovering it, sense that I'll come back to it for years etc etc. This year I can't think of one single song that was head and shoulders above the others like that. Must partly be due to being in Japan now, where the club scene's really good fun, but obviously very detached from UK where you can get that almost physical sense of aura around certain tracks due to them being shared across the country, played at every club you go to, on the radio, coming out of cars etc. It's something people in the US and UK should feel really thankful for, that sense of music being central to the cultural life of the country, something that means a lot to a massive of people, not just a small subculture.

^^ agree with the above. In the end settled on a label to best represent what I was feeling: Audio Rehab.

Here's a mix featuring all my favourite releases from them this year along with a few others from Audiowhore, Recess Recordings, SOTU, Toob & Up Tempo.

This sort of list interests me cos I'm so disconnected from popular taste for the most part (obviously I've heard of 'Latch' though roflflflf). I've heard some of these in the gym though.

Edit/update: most of these tunes are shitcakes.

Ellie Gouldings song has the stupidest sounding chorus of all time. They could have got an automated voice do that song and it would sound the same. And that description is even stupider.

You're missing their dreadful production, but Dont Save Me is a blinding pop record. I just like the fact they have hooks, and little vocal ticks. It's just lovingly written pop, in the way that Hanson were, stuff like that.

This one might pique your interest, it's kinda Aaliyah, although I prefer them when they're being Fleetwood Mac. I think it's their minimalism that has interested people, for me it's the songwriting. :
