i think i have been told this before with great authority by martin clark. but now have forgotten what he said - and can't find a record of the conversation.

there was a very early dizzy rascal tune - before i luv u - it never made it past a dub-plate - that was particularly magical.

i can't even remember very much about it - i heard it on the wireless in primrose hill. beat was slightly slower and weary even. he was talking about the daily grind.

any leads? that would be appreciated.

but sadly not one of these beauties. he sounds less confident on my one i think.

i wonder if anyone else has some suggestions - before i drop blackdown a line...

@patrick

as martin just confirmed too YES - that's it - it's called "Win" - thanks for your help.

i remember referring to it to simon back in the day as the tune where he goes "i love.. i love..." and simon thought i was referring to "i love you" - which actually i hadn't heard. not even sure that "i love you" was even out on white label at that point - i picked up my copy later when it hit the shops. but "Win" never came out i don't think. a shame.....

aah! those were the days.

quite sobering - was looking here at dizzee's singles placement

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dizzee_Rascal_discography

i mean - he had a DAMNED good run - pretty amazing - but sad to see "love this town" (2013) - #35 and "still sittin' here" (2014) -#47 slipping down the charts

win is good. but what the world really needs is a release of all those instrumentals that were in that ch4 documentary on dizzee when tongue in cheek came out...

i have a bunch of those early instrumentals - i wonder if that's what you mean? tracks like "go" and "ho"

i do have those too but in that docu, there were quite a few others that sounded like they all came from that same period... all the same sorts of sounds. im guessing he made a lot more beats back then than he does now.

i always found him making instrumentals a bit puzzling TBH

maybe he thought it was a good way of making a few extra quid?

why puzzling? i think quite a few mcs dabbled in making beats. i think i read that how it worked for dizzee was that cage gave him all the sounds, and dizzee just put them together (and then im guessing cage engineered them). there is a certain touch he has that you can hear when hes producing. shame he doesnt do it that much now. maybe he thought that since wiley was producing, he should/could do it too. but hes always seemed like someone who likes control, so i can see why he might want to do it all.

there was an old roll deep interview (when in at the deep end was coming out) where danny weed was talking about dizzees beats being 'mad' but in a kind of 'this guy is kinda weird' rather than 'mad = amazing' way. even now theres something weird when i luv u comes on in an old grime mix - it still sticks out.

Matt, did you see him on that Mistajam session with general levy, jammer, JME, Skepta etc.?

The exuberance, and... I dunno, joy is palpable. Reminder of what a loss he was to the scene.
