I never liked his technique iyswim, even though I could appreciate it, intellectually. It gave me too much of a rock virtuoso vibe.

Not that I'm against rock virtuosos from time to time.

Chris Squire's monstrous avant-funk basslines in Yes. Larry Heard def sighted Yes as an influence!

@rubberdingyrapids the thing with Eminem and as third made the astute point is yes he's technically gifted...but that's it at this point, it should be a marvel to listen to what he does with words but its resulted in alot of terrible jokes, ill thought out ideas, Machine Gun Kelly of all people said it best when he said Eminem raps like all he does is just read the dictionary and stay inside

not to focus on this for too long but a guy i used to follow made a really interesting point how as much as Eminem loves rap and the art of rapping, respects the culture and those who cames before him it comes across like he never took in any of the things that make rap what it is.

Like "Sing for the Moment" which isn't a bad track has him rapping over a Aerosmith sample, the beats stiff and has that empty moody sound all his beats had for a long time.

hes a bit like nas, thats all, a gifted MC, but not so gifted as picking good music (he has never been a good producer AFAIK). maybe purposely, so as to highlight himself, and show he makes the track, not the beats. hes also, like any ageing artist, become stuck, and out of ideas. so now all he has is technique. hes lucky though, he has a really loyal fanbase. and they prob still buy cds.

Nas definitly has that but i feel like in part because of expectations people over emphasise his faults and failings especially when compared to Jay-Z who if you listen to certain people never fell off or made a bad creative decision ever

i really doubt that idea that he purposfully makes bad beats cause like...what's the point that was the rumour that was apprently why Nas said that he picked "bad" beats but all even now i've never heard it confirmed

just one of those things that snowballed into being taken as a fact

i guess, purposely making bad beats is the wrong phrasing, more that he thinks those beats are best for him/his ego, in that they would never upstage or get in the way of his vocals.

ilx discusses ruff Sqwad.

honestly i think RS might be one of the most overrated crews in grime
sure they have some moments of brilliance/greatness, but they usually pad it out with real sub-dipset crap
they had underground which was amazing, then on the b side they put that rubbish heatmakers-gone-grime track
i want to like them cos grime bloggers love em so much but they seem really inconsistent. i think they just want to make hip-hop really, but somehow ended up in grime (thinking about that now, that might a common dilemma)
i wonder when the next wiley agenda adjustment will come, its been quite a while.

lol honkies.

"what makes 2004 'grimier,' economically, politically, socially, than 1999?"
more gun crime in london?
its hard to tell sometimes with grime how pronounced the influx of urban decay in london really is or if its just part and parcel of the actual genre, i.e. its de facto POV
