Ok.

That was his specialist subject. Scholar of north London grime. Stuff no one had heard at the time and no one remembers now., not even the people who made it.

very ragga this section i'm listening to now, but rolling, like time-stretching just the one sample, and integrating it into a flow, the roll is priveleged

This mix is good, nice and rolling, has been good to chill and draw to

Vinyl and I think now tapes have been pressed from it.

Tom boogizm is a good lad, he's been around a while and played a good set at the White Hotel after Black mecha, which was a bit of an unfollowable slot, cos fortress crookedjaw did a proper back to the audience, washing machine drum set. But then Tom bug gets on and drops some fat quite cheesy breaks and it was the exactly right thing to do after that onslaught of noise.

good mix, the omar s one, sort of moving through the gears on it, with the almost soulful start, before it gets a bit more 4/4

STUDIO ONE: DUB SPECIALIST

Dub Specialist was a series of dub LP releases on Studio One throughout the 70s created by Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. These limited releases were mixed by various engineers over the decade, including Syd Bucknor, Sylvan Morris & Overton "Scientist" Brown. This hour long session takes a deeper look at the back catalogue.
Compiled & mixed by Estelle Birch.

Some truly sublime shit on here which makes me wonder why I wasn't already a Studio One fanboy...

One of my speciality topics.

A few favourites in there, though it must be said that S1 didn't hold a monopoly on this particular brand of beauty. Decent selection of some amazing music though and some of the most important riddims too.

If you wanna touch the stars listen to this one. Incredible on every level.

I was wondering about that. The heavy reverb drench reminds me of the heart of the Congos. That sort of ghostly dreamy feeling and the drums feeling somehow swampy and moist.

Are those harmonies influenced by Doo Wop? There's a similar feeling there of sweet melancholy.

Well, Coxsone had a pretty good team & Sylvan Morris would have been in the driving seat for at least some of those tunes. The whole era is distinguished by an incredible mix of near perfect songwriting, musicianship, harmony and production.

Doo Wop harmony has a very particular (and simple) musical formula, so while I dont think there's much of a formal musical influence there, there's definitely a strong aesthetic link, and of course a lot of the other music that influenced reggae was also influenced by doo wop and was heavy on vocal harmony. There was also a doo wop scene in jamaica that preceded reggae and also involved people like Coxsone.
I actually had a bit of an existential crisis there a few years back when I couldnt decide if doo wop had taken rocksteady's crown as best music of all time.
