It's funny to think, in retrospect, that we spent eight years laughing at "Bushisms", and then Trump comes along, almost as if to say "Hold my beer."

With Obama sandwiched in between them, who was articulate almost to a fault.

I did like the one where Bush is on the golf course and he says something like "Just thinking about a nuclear attack - now watch this drive" - what is it with US presidents and golf? US presidents and Iggy Pop - ok and my Dad - must make up about half the people in the world who like the "sport".

Reagan had his moments too of course. I think it's now pretty much accepted that he was suffering from dementia during most of his second term. Makes me almost regret that Trump didn't get one when you think about how much he might have degenerated by the end of that. Almost.
Either way surely this is one of the all time greatest presidential gaffes
On August 11, 1984, President Ronald Reagan makes a joking but controversial off-the-cuff remark about bombing Russia while testing a microphone before a scheduled radio address. While warming up for the speech, Reagan said “My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.”

Golf should be permanently cancelled

That wasn’t a gaffe, it was a joke.

My friend says Trump saying I won't be at the inauguration is code for "go ahead and bomb it/strafe it with automatic gunfire"... I didn't think of that. 🙁

Also it went out to the radio shows live, so although it wasn't broadcast all the radio staff heard it direct from the president.
Just more generally, an inappropriate joke can be a gaffe I think.

that was the tipping point for twitter. trump's second to last tweet went on about all the usual conspiracy bullshit and how his MAGA patriots have to never give up the fight, and then his final tweet was that he wasn't going to attend the inauguration. like tossing the car keys and saying "hey kids, I'm not going to be using this tomorrow".
