Spoke to Marfox briefly when he was in Tokyo and I asked him what it was like in Lisbon. He was saying that things (as with pretty much anywhere) are really dominated by standard house and techno stuff, suggesting that there aren't actually too many nights for him and other Principe artists to play at. Maybe the thing at Music Box is one of the only regular nights going on?
I reckon could be. There aren't really that many spaces to be honest. For largish venues that take risks you've got Lux that is over a thousand capacity and then Music Box which I think is about seven hundred (I know that cos we're putting our friend Tolouse LowTrax on there in July hint hint promo advert), then there are Kremlin and Ministerium or something which I've never been to but which seem to be just as you described. Then after that there are smaller places that are kinda 150 or 200 or so (Le Baron and Damas for instance) but most have just bar music. There is the occasional rave type things but I mean occasional. There is a place I've not been to which our friends are DJ-ing at on Weds which might be cool, I hope to go and check it out.

I think you should
I've just realised that my friend is DJ-ing that same night. But one good thing about Lisbon is that most things are on until six minimum, especially on a weekend, so it may well be possible to do both.

And after you've finished at 6, you'll be ready for your cross-country drive :)

Here's an instagram account which i think is marcio martos, the guy who does the art https://www.instagram.com/nao_ta_disponivel/ i like how there's multiple overlapping projects, sound/vision, all tied together. signs of a healthy culture

Well, I'll probably carry on through Sunday too and then practise driving on the Monday. I'll be ultra alert (well jumpy) after three days with no sleep.

That artwork (in the Insta) is killer aint it? I didn't say but like everyone else it was part of why I was interested in this label. I asked some dj what a tune was and he held up this record with what looked like ink still drying on it and I was instantly intrigued...

NTS: You’re pretty committed to the physicalization of this distinctly digital music – can you talk about the design and the visuals on the label?

Pedro Gomes: It’s all done by Márcio, who’s a co-founder of the label, and is probably our favourite poster-artist in Lisbon at the moment, and the most requested one – everybody just loves Márcio, as they should. In his artwork, as in his DJing, he’s incredibly intuitive. He just does shit that just works, people get it. His two most commonly used words are “hot” and “power” – he’s a monosyllabical demon. He’s a guy from a volcanic island off the atlantic coast of Portugal – there’s a volcano, and a lot of ocean. And granite.
What he does, you could call it iconographical work. He works with icons, 700 year old icons, 3000 year old icons, two year old icons…the work he’s been doing for Príncipe deals with our contemporary culture, with Portugal processing our imperialist phase dealing with it postcolonially (or not dealing with it). Márcio is also an urban interventionist, if you can call it that – he’s a very experienced stencil artist. Everybody just falls in love with his artwork. We outlined everything very carefully before we started – we’re trying to do the artwork in a way in which all the records look like they came from us, and hopefully they’re gonna get more and more wonderful, and when you’ve owned sixty or seventy Príncipe records hopefully they’ll be a glorious little package. Márcio does all our artwork for us, including the artwork for our club nights, and the logo which is crazy, I love the logo. It’s the face of everybody, the face of nobody – everybody and nobody’s king. Or queen.

DD: Why the ‘fox’ name tag? Are you part of a larger group?

DJ Marfox: My name Marfox is born out of the long afternoons spent playing the Nintendo 64 game Star Fox. The addiction to it was so enormously widespread that a pun arose in the ghetto where I lived where you would take out three or four letters of your name and replace it with the word ‘fox’. So my name is Marlon and I took out the three final words and it became Marfox.

I’m gonna acquiesce to that idea that I let loose so many foxes. I’m the first DJ of Lisbon to use the name ‘fox’ (in the kuduro/batida scene). The expansion of ‘fox’ just took off due to people appreciating the music, many of them got acquainted with my music at an early age and I ended up having an influence on their lives as producers and DJs.

Niagara is the best act on Principe; their recent album was a masterpiece. The other acts are cool as well, but rhytmically this is getting a bit tired/predictable now. Also soundwise too much sound generic. Still, one of the best labels around.

yeah i listened to a bit of niagara today, one of their mixes of their own productions. it's certainly a totally different vibe to the rest of the stuff, which like you say, sortof seems to blend into one thing. can't say the niagara stuff blew me away tho, was pleasant enough.

i'd like some of these producers start to do more vocal, singer-songwriter stuff.

Listen to their album 'Apologia'. And no it's not that 'mindblowing', but it grows on you instead. I don't want mindblowing stuff anyways, stresses me out in the long run. Their 12s on their own label 'Ascender' is also what I love to hear in techno, a bit like late 90s wierd acid experiments on djax/force inc/profan, but with a even more loose vibe. They're def my favorite acts over the last 3-4 years.

Will check it out! It's very weird for me with dance music nowadays, I can't really get into new/contemporary stuff unless I hear it out, or buy it on tape. Like I might listen to a snippet on the computer but it's hard to get a sense. I used to listen more in the car, but I drive less often now. But this morning I listened to the marfox meu estilo mix while cycling and that was pretty good. And then the Niagara mix for astral plane. Probably preferred the first one though. The Niagara one felt reminiscent of early warp stuff and I think I was so into that music for a while that anything that I hear now that is even remotely similar makes me think of that too much... But will check the album out for sure, thanks for the tip

Found apologia to be not as good as the dancey stuff
