Who are the best music journalists currently/ever?

It's a shame if the best music journalists today are writing about stuff like Paul McCartney and Wings :crylarf:

I think it is a disadvantage, yeah. But I've always been pro-professional print media, so I would say that. I like a glossy mag with beautifully shaped prose.

I listened to tortoise on a long car journey a few months back. It was close to unlistenable. Middle management dinner jazz

We were a very strange lot back in the late 90s or whenever it was, listening to tortoise. It was like a collective hallucination.

i loved their first album. really really loved it. still love it.

also this was fantastic

but by the time of the second lp i think they lost it. but that was widely praised and the TNT one even more which wasn't my thing either.

i think they needed to keep one foot in that slint rock aesthetic - but they didn't.

i saw them as a backing band for tom ze (who i rate SO HIGHLY) and that was good too.

i used to be madly in love with lester bangs writing (aged 19) that psychotic reactions book was like a bible to me. i do not exagerate. but i had another look a year or so ago and i wasn't quite as struck by it. still very special.

and david toop. toop was massive for me. so: reynolds/bangs/toop.

young'uns/young-guns: i thought mike powell had excellent taste. andy beta has exquisite taste too. with andy beta you know it's going to be worth checking out (part of the good taste thing has an element of playing it safe f'sure)

Andy Beta has such enthusiasm and passion that even when I don't enjoy the music he's selling as good I feel bad I don't.

Ray Philps is someone whose style I like a lot too.

The people at Chart Music did a really gross thing recently that put me off them completely. Some guy had an anecdote about pretending to be a member of Menswear to get a shag and it was presented as a funny story and not a violation of informed consent which ewww

I picked up a new David Toop album a fortnight ago, on Room 40. He's consistently great.

I keep on saying it but really enjoying Toneglow.substack.com atm

Who was that, then? Simon Price, Neil Kulkarni, Taylor Parkes or David Stubbs?

Yes just to be clear it wasn't a journo themselves it was a listener but the Chart Music page itself had shared it
