i like their origin story, using the burroughs dido for their name, and the fact that one of them stopped and got intrigued by the others playing, cos he thought it mustve been a black guy.

i also like fleetwood mac, again cos dean blunt champions them

There's the muso perfectionist aspect, and then the arch, ironic, sneering lyrics — and these seem of a piece. All spontaneity stamped out.

I read a thread on ILX about steely dan and the people who absolutely hated them were rock/punk idealists.

The people defending them seemed insufferable too, of course...

I'm a fan but - take 'Pretzel Logic'. I don't really like most of that album. In fact I only REALLY like 'Any Major Dude Will Tell You'.

I guess I REALLY like 3 songs on 'Aja'.

Feels weird describing yourself as a 'fan' when you don't really care for a significant chunk of their corpus.
