This is brilliantterrible song. The words don't fit the rhythm of the melody, and Adams' vocal performance steamrollers over any nuance or sentimentality suggested by the trite lyrics - he has no sense of sweetness or nostalgia, he just bellows. The music itself is a tracing of a stadium-rock template, all bombast and no humility or humanity. Nothing about it feels real or familiar or relatable - it's just cliches and tropes that were already exhausted in the 80s, never mind 30+ years later.

But the point is that as it recedes into the past it becomes a good summer. And what's more, it seems like it seemed to last forever.I hate it when people pretend they had a good summer once. Did you fuck. A good afternoon is believable, not a whole summer
