Unlurking with some trepidation to post this :

Which I've been familiar with for years but for some reason only really clicked with me recently. Must have listened to it 15-20 times this week.
Everything people say about Lennon's Imagine (which to be clear I fkn hate) being the perfect 'sugared pill' subversive pop song is actually true about this song imo.

Wish I liked Scritti's mid-to-late 80s stuff more than I do, but I guess if TSG clicked then it's possible that will eventually too.

Welcome back! ❌

I listened to a bit of Scritti after reading 'Rip it up and start again'. I liked 'Absolute' the most.

Cheers - got this playing on Spotify now and yeah, it's kind of a jam. The singing voice Gartside uses on this and a lot of the other Cupid & Psyche songs is definitely a bit odd though. Not bad, just..odd.

Anyway, in the spirit of basic human interaction (never my strong point obv.), how's things with you?

Edit: Ahh, Spotify has now reached Perfect Way - I'd forgotten this one was pretty great too. What a chorus!

^Cheers pal. Will have to find something even worse to treat you all to tomorrow.
Without wanting to brown-nose too much (though again, habits of a lifetime etc.), having peeked into a few of the active politics threads I'm grateful for you and droid being the voices of sanity & generally fighting the good fight.

Keeping the RIUASA-canon vibes going from yesterday's pick (& k-punk canon too obv.) :

The whole of the Tin Drum album is just fantastic really. I think when I first got it I expected something very dated/of-its-time in the way that a lot of stuff in that zone of early 80s British synthpop/New Romantic/New Pop is, but apart from Sylvian's vocal style marking it out as early 80s it feels very fresh and modern to me. Just the sound is great, so many shiny surfaces. Very fluid bass-and-drum grooves too, not stilted in the way a lot of 80s pop sounds to me.

Kind of like Scritti though, my main disappointment with Japan is that none of their other albums seem to match up to Tin Drum; even the other highly-rated ones like Quiet Life & Gentlemen Take Polaroids have never really clicked with me (the title track from Quiet Life is great though - big Moroder vibes).

Tin Drum is a fantastic album, but so is Gentleman Take Polaroids, stick with it, it gets better the more you play it. Also love Scritti, but then I also love their "dated" contemporaries: pre-pomp Simple Minds, Associates, Heaven 17 of Penthouse and Pavement, ABC, Visage. I even have a soft spot for the likes of Duran's The Chauffeur and Planet Earth and Spandau's To Cut a Long Story Short and Chant # 1.

From 'Gentleman...'. Sounds boring until about the 5th time you hear it, then it sounds amazing.

Edit: also, by this point, they LOOKED great.

Tin Drum, Sulk, Fourth Drawer Down, New Gold Dream clearly the peaks of this era, though. Also Technodelic if you venture out of the UK, e.g.

Duran's Planet Earth is an outrageous Xerox of Japan's Quiet Life. But that's kind of cool, I think.

i remember being amazed when "fourth drawer down" and "sulk" came out, sounded unlike anything else, otherworldly. they still sound unlike anything else.
