Beast of Burden

The Alessi Brothers were part of the Yacht Rock royal court. Sounding and looking like Christopher Cross and the Bee Gees spliced together with surgical precision, they were responsible for the sumptuous 1977 hit ‘Oh Lori’ and the beautiful but oddly creepy ‘Seabird’, both of which still sound fantastic. Their saccharine, sun-kissed melodies and light souffle sound led them on to work with the likes of Paul McCartney, Olivia Newton John, Art Garfunkle and John Lennon.

But all of that is ultimately irrelevant, because the only thing they ever did that really mattered, their only real and total shot at immortality, was heralded by Peter Venkman leaning out of ECTO-1 and barking at the military escort that Mayor Lenny had laid on for the Ghostbusters’ final showdown at Spook Central: “C’mon, let’s run some red lights!”

This is the version that was made for the film, rather than put on the soundtrack LP -- it’s extended, has added horns, and squeezes every drop of adrenaline out of the arrangement, blowing it up to epic scale. Anyone who has had this scene locked in their imagination since childhood (I am not alone here) will immediately recognise every detail of this definitive mix, only recently rescued by Billy and Bobby from the original master tapes.

What does this song mean, why is it one of the most exciting and rousing pieces of music ever made? The tension, the sense of mission, the anticipation. The spectral sunlight drenching Columbus Circle and Central Park West as our heroes drive headlong and determined towards their fate. The ecstatic crowds, including a group of Hasidic Rabbis, waving their Ghostbusters merchandise, giving moral support to the only people who can save their city. Evil, black clouds pouring out of The Shandor Building as Zuul prepares for the coming of Gozer: the atmosphere thick, and heady, and curdling. This whole sequence is one of the greatest visual representations of teamwork in the face of adversity ever put on screen and it is propelled and elevated by the mechanics of this incredible song.

I was just trying to have a laugh by posting a song from Ghostbusters every day until Halloween, but you've just deflated and ruined the whole thing, which is a shame.
