The k punk blog is brilliant. His judo move of saying it's good because it's superficial is the sort of thing you sometimes do Luka.

"The almost whinnying quality of Ferry's angst is retained, but transposed into a pure styling devoid of emotional content"

I'm really annoyed that I could only describe that vocal tic as "pigeon"-like when its clearly fucking pony-like, it's no wonder I'm not a great poet is it?

I was thinking how his voice is so full of tics and trills that it's almost like an electronically treated vocal without the electronic intervention. Like a sample in a Todd Edwards tune or something.

This was the bit in that k-punk piece that really stuck for me,

"... if superficiality is defined as lack of depth, is depth not defined as lack of surface?"

You ever heard him speak? It's strange to hear him just talking after hearing the way he sings.

I mean it's not though is it, it's defined as having a lot going on beneath the present surface.

I think there's a trade off when it comes to art though. You can't really focus on both at once. You either stay on the surface or excavate.

I guess ultimately it's a meaningless metaphor when you really think about it, there's no such thing as a depth beneath the surface in music. It's all surface. You can hear it all. Unless we're talking like.. subsonic sound or something.

But maybe that's me being too literal. We all know depth in music isn't referring to some physical plane (although the metaphor is suggestive). It's to do with complexity, progression, subtlety etc.

And then there is all sorts of stuff around the notion of emotional or intellectual or spiritual depth

And the two are conflated, that's interesting.

Like the fact that you can hear space in dub makes it seem more wise.

This "ghosts" song has spatial depth to it, no? Emotionally I suppose he means it's all posing, over the top, parodic of real emotion which I assume is why Luka hates it.
