It would be more interesting if it hadn't turned out that, despite the feeling one instinctively has that such a peculiar and almost self-contradictory trait ought to be extremely rare, it is in fact one shared by almost every band that you don't like.
Annoyingly though, on this one (and quite possibly all the others for all I know) it's hard to argue. I always wonder if one day some kind of thing will click in my brain and Steely Dan will make sense but every time I go to check them out and see if it has happened yet they still remain hidden behind some curtain of misapprehension that I can't even begin to penetrate. No reason to give up hope though, there have been many other bands that I similarly couldn't grasp and which did click with me one day though none took so long as this.
As an aside, I wonder to myself what it is that makes me say with some music "I don't like that" but with other music "I don't understand this yet" - I guess I am cravenly covering my arse in case I do somehow do come to like it one day but why have some bands got PR good enough to make me think in that way?

it's probably hard to get steely dan without knowing '70s LA. the lifestyle, the characters, Hollywood, "the industry". all the same reasons I'll never really get oasis.

I somehow group Joni's Hissing of Summer Lawns with Steely Dan – a similarly jazzy, sleazy, slightly alienating sound which I suppose is linked by being recorded in 70's LA.

There is nothing to get with Oasis, other than comedy jpgs of the younger half-wit brother bowling round in Burberry and other absurd coats while gurning

This is Choon of the Day mainly because the two places that Sylvester thinks about when he thinks of Britain are Liverpool and Wales:

He specifically wants Scousers and the Welsh to Rock the Box.

George Harrison - I'd Have You Anytime

Spotify shuffled this one at me. I'm in a highly sentimental mood and have been all week, if not longer. I'm talking almost crying whenever I listen to anything from "Blue" and just now almost crying at several Bob Dylan songs. Is it because I've come off my citalopram? Or am I pregnant? I dunno. Anyway, in this highly impressionable mood this song seems beautiful to me. I probably should check out more GHarrison, given that I think Something is one of the most beautiful Beatles songs.

today while i was sitting by the river this incredibly loud impossibly loud abstract sound repetitive mental sound come blasting out from somewhere and this stony faced black geeer with a shaved head appeared pushing this sack cart with a comically big speaker strapped to it and i was thinking what the fuck is this this sounds mental. it turned out to be this
great example of the transformational properties of extreme volume

it sounded incredible it really did. theres a new mental illness where people just go up and down the river blasting out music all day. the same people all the time. theres loads of them. its this nutter scene that sprung up over the pandemic year. most cycle up and down but theres a few that just push these hilariously big speakers on little trolleys

Did the Oasis song sound good that loud?

Have to say that one doesn't sound good at the volume I'm listening to it. A big soupy wall of sound. But I remember loving it as a kid when presumably I was cranking it at deafening volume into my ears.

There's a guy in Manchester who's been doing this for years, going up and down Oxford road. He's on a bike and all the music he plays is 80s. Like he's stuck on that. But it's usually very good. Big sound as well.
