K-Punk

I loved that tbh. He’s fucking brilliant, he’s teaching me, he’s a historian and I’m not.

But also steeped in pretty stifling identity stuff Hippy culture is 60 years old... is not a criticism is it.

It is when this revolves around capitalist realism. There is nothing more capitalist realist than hippy culture. If anything, it's *too square* today for the genteel metropolitan middle classes. One could even say too conservative. People don't understand this. Even old bill do drugs before they sign up for the job these days, not out of deviancy, but just because its so normalised.

Now I know Mark's idea wasn't to fetishise drugs, I'm not that *clueless.* But one cannot doubt that it is the products of that psychedelic culture, in like rave as a lumpen psychedelia he wants to engage with. And I'm saying there's nothing left to engage with there. Perhaps in the 70s when the left could be (re)orientated to the working class, but the left has long since decomposed in the safe ensconces of academia and bureaucratised trade unions. And again, if this was a problem exclusive to the UK, again the acid communism idea might cary more weight. But even in regions that are rapidly industrialising like Turkey, we are witnessing what we witnessed in this country in the 1980s and 1990s. Luke is right that if there is a culture that isn't subject to the global culture of capital, it sooner than later will be absorbed. It's just the way that a society based on unbound exchange works at the subconscious level.

I also remember when reading k-punk how much contempt he had for drug takers and particular weed smokers. Some of it justified for sure, but there was def a puritanical big boy managerial streak running through him.

I wager that had he ever taken acid, it would have probably scared him shitless and he wouldn't have been able to surrender. And if you want to engage with cultures of mutual care and joy, you have to surrender the stiff upper British lip.

Do people not like that essay? I think its great. Gus will surely enjoy it aswell

That essay doesn't bother me in the slightest, I'm bored shitless by all the non-controversy it generated. @blockhead is right, he wrote much, much worse. It's a bad essay but within the context of Landian accelerationism, not because he abandoned the ethnics and the class, he had done that a long, long time before that.

hmmm yes we can trace the conservativatiin of psychedelic culture ( shaman guy in capitol) but dont let who does or doesn’t do drugs dominate here thats stupid, thats what you’re criticising mark for and what woebit gets criticised for too. we cant reduce queer culture to who puts cocks in whos arses etc. It’s v reductive

Is that even relevant to the essay? Its little more than a call out on academic leftism. Or is even the recognition of the academic left the qualm?

Yes because in trying to understand class he ends up capitulating to the identity politics he criticises his opponents for.

I mean, again, queer culture is a predominantly white, Amerocentric thing. None of my gay mates, and myself as a bisexual consider ourselves a part of that putrid stink.
American queer culture is very black. At least large swathes of it.

I edited my post there. Yes, you are right. hence why I added if not white, amerocentric.

And that is the problem. Black and brown people everywhere and at all times have their own specific histories, which American cultural dominance attempts to erase.

Something like this is horrifying to some American queers. But this is how we all grew up. We all used to tease each other with chichiman and fassyman. In the same way that I do not mind that certain non-muslim white mates of mine call me osama bin largeone for a laugh. But these things are based on a specific context and cannot be applied universally. Neither does it mean that ethnic banter abolishes racism - neither does five a side footie. But what it does indicate is a willingness to transgress the boundaries inscribed by politicos.
