why is ambient so popular now

I agree there's something there!

I wonder if this idea of a release from ego is also related to a kind of *universality* in a lot of ambient music. Like many of the specific signifiers that would root it in a place or a person have been washed away- voice, rhythm patterns, even recognisable instrumentation in some cases.

That's interesting to. I said on that journalism thread I loved ocean of sound when I read it at the end of he 90s. I just aren't sure it cancels out my line of inquiry. (In response to droid this was)

I think droid is wary cos he thinks this is just me trying to surreptiously call him a gay or something. But it's absolutely not.

Surrender is definitely a thing , but that's also integral to loads of music, anything trance inducing - techno, the drum circle obv - but also the body pump of the mosh pit, the slow dance, gospel. Ambient is perhaps more explicit in catering to the hypnagogic impulse but its not wildly unusual in that aspect of functionality.

I feel you will resist if I use the word disembodied. But it does feel very different to the Dionysian kind of trance. I mean, you can't dance to it. It's contemplative. Like a tea ceremony.

RZA DROPS NEW EP OF GUIDED MEDITATION TRACKS FOR CREATIVES

IME EKPO FEBRUARY 27, 2020 (The Source)

RZA is without a doubt a master of many talents which is nothing short of his genuine creativity. In support of fellow creatives, right on Wu Wednesday, the abbot of the Wu-Tang Clan dropped a new EP titled Guided Explorations. The five-track EP is a part of a collaborative effort with premiere herbal tea TAZO, where RZA is stationed as the listener’s calming guide to revelation.

The five tracks are strategically formulated to help aspiring creatives breakthrough any burden that may be preventing them from access to their core intuition through the act of meditation.

RZA’s collaboration is not just limited to an EP. Accompanying the gem will be two-day camping retreat called Camp TAZO, where adults will spend time with the Wu icon practicing key measures to help them unlock their creative potential ultimately serving pure zen. The camp is set to take place in Staten Island, his respective stomping grounds.

unrelated but this promotional hand moisturizer for the Wu TV show - posed next to a subwoofer - amused me and sits by our kitchen sink

that being said, this is perfectly targeted at "the creative class", 35-45 year old wannabe-hipster white dude creative directors at ad agencies who desperately want to be inspired (as long as their agency picks up the cost of the retreat).

Thought this was the soundtrack to something I've seen at first (Midsommar?). Same grinding, dragging, doomy strings.

Why is ambient so popular with me right now?

Cos I have to focus at work.

Not the ideal conditions to listen attentively to stuff but I'm discovering some good shit in the process.

Is this ambient for n00bs?

I've had their albums on while I work today and it's occasionally been distractingly beautiful.
