people like Stars of the Lid but they never totally got off the ground for me, sometimes I put on Vegetarian Fuckface before bed

IT all sounds the same. Doesn't matter what the name of the record is, ambient is ambient, might as well listen to your fridge humming and gurgling to itself

That is lush tbf. Also totally proves Luka's point about it not mattering what the name of the record is when you can just stick on the PlayStation menu music.

Re: the ambient is ambient thing, I asked way back on this thread how you distinguish between 'good' and 'bad' ambient. I don't dispute that there are such things. I think it must come down to fine distinctions. In the same way you can differentiate (if you're into that sort of thing) good abstract painting from bad abstract painting. To me the good stuff looks quite like the bad stuff.

Yeah i probably said it first then you would have read it in a stoned trance and then repeated it a day later as if it was your original thought, that's how dissensus works.

I wonder if the composer of the PS5 menu music makes a packet off it.
I doubt it, most of the Japanese games companies have inhouse composers who are probably just on a standard wage.

Arca was commissioned to make the boot up sound for the Analogue Mega SG system
you'd imagine they got paid for that, but its not on the same level as playstation. Luke Vibert made another one for them but it's not very interesting.

You'd expect Eno made some bank from Microsoft for the Win95 system sounds

A personal favourite is the Wii system sounds
composed by another fairly faceless, long time, nintendo composer Kazumi Totaka - who is also the voice of Yoshi. if my fridge sounded this chill i'd be very happy.

I pointed this out originally actually. Using this place to mine opinions to make myself seem smart on dates

Another way to approach this might be ‘ is all music ambient now?’ Which is to say music consumption trends (free everything everywhere) have relegated music to being merely supplemtary, complementary, accompanying product to match mood context and environment or identity. Less of an event in itself
