what blew my mind recently was learning that those vocalisations they do are very specifically spelling out rhythms with each syllable the name of a sound the tabla makes, hands in different positions etc. i just thought it was some random rhythmic jibberish lol

Yeah,, It's the percussive vocal dictionary of the bhols (notes) a tabla can play. String solo bhols are with worth a listen as they very different and almost drone like.

I think traditionally the ustad (nearest translation is master, i guess) would pass down his drum patterns to his students verbally, which would then be repeated on the tabla. The added advantage would be the student could learn these verbal patterns and practice them mentally without access to a tabla.

makes sense. i read a youtbe comment about one of these top tabla players and it was saying oh his dad (another master) used to carry him in his arms reciting thsoe vocal patterns

Ooh looking forward to watching these later, nice one I've always liked the banshees but found them hard work at times, but this unexpectedly blew me away last night. And yeah, Gecko stuck out as an immediate fave, but really the whole thing I found entrancing.

The only thing I can think of that sounds remotely close to this is bow wow wow or adam and the ants or maybe some slits stuff, but this is on a whole next of level of exotic, erotic, shamanic weirdness while still being really listenable and not just experimental for its own sake. Can't wait to listen again.

Ah yeah, he's an amazing drummer, love that slits album as well.

Siouxsie's got that almost Jim Morrison-esque shamanic thing going on, with added body horror vibes that can get a bit much for me at times with the banshees, but really works here.

It also made me wonder whether the sort of exoticism in this (that spooky hawaaian choir) and other stuff from the era like adam and the ants, bow wow wow etc would get cancelled in today's climate for cultural appropriation.

Yeah that miss the girl song popped up on my spotify which led me to check out the album, its brilliant. Must be inspired by JG Ballard's Crash I guess.

I LOVE that DJ Smiley Bobby release. Easily one of my favorite releases this year.
surprised to see it on youtube though - I was asked by the label to take it down when I posted it.
