Give us the inside gossip, Stan, what is Hollywood expecting to happen with the new Matrix and Ghostbusters films?
Hoping for indefinite franchise potential probably, but personally I doubt these two. Nothing like the MCU in this regard.

Just watching the matrix now. There's this preamble part in the Netflix version that I don't think Ive ever seen before.

The main thing I've noticed so far is the very low budget feel of eg neo's office and the interrogation room.

The desaturated colours as well, or greening of everything.

And when they meet under the bridge, the literal buckets full of rain

Trying to think what my favourite film is now without sounding/being pretentious

So I don't want to say Wild Strawberries even tho it is probably - it's pretentious and sentimental and cynical and bleak and occasionally funny - LIKE ME!

The movie/s I've watched most in my life are probably the lord of the rings movies which I have a deep and 80% ironic affection for. There's about 20% of genuinely thrilling and scary bits in the trilogy and the rest is all horribly pompous and/or twee guff and that's the stuff I enjoy because of years of pisstaking and injokes between me and various friends I've forced to watch them again and again and again. I saw it in a cinema not long ago (literally all three back to back) and it was really weird cos all the nerds there were GENUINELY laughing at the terrible jokes and slapstick.
I watched wild strawberries again recently and it's really good isn't it. I like the bit where the daughter in law goes for a swim. And the dysfunctional couple they pick up. He's good is Bergmann, watched persona a few days later and that's really good as well.

But wild strawberries is better, it keeps moving with all the people he meets and you think you know what's coming so the actual ending is a good flip.

It's exactly the same story as terminator isn't it. Humans vs machines. That's our Myth isn't it. We're stuck on it, can't see past it.

it's also really reminding me of alien, the sort of cabin fever of them all on the ship, eating their horrible food.

'Inception' is probably the closest film there's been to 'The Matrix' since 'The Matrix'.
inception is nowhere near as good as the matrix but maybe i need to watch it five more times. hes getting better though, i thought tenet was better so maybe next one will be even better

Cummings is into the rationalist community (which is roughly 2/3 right; 1/3 left, with a heavy STEM and libertarian bent), not Rand - it's all laid out in his blog but the media haven't realised how much of an influence the rationalists are on him, as they're ignorant of the movement themselves.

I've been to Randian meetups: they're a friendly bunch. Last time I went I argued that Rand's 'trader principle' could justify socialism (Rand distinguished between compelled altruism and charitable benevolence; a socialist system could be established from the latter with a slightly wider, but more realistic, application of the principle).

They're very enthusiastic about Rand but it didn't strike me as a cult: they're very happy to be debated, to host the Rand-curious like me and welcome Rand-haters, whom they treat very politely (the converse is often not the case).

Rand's thinking is richer than libertarian thought, from what I've read about both (I've been to libertarian meetups too). The libertarians have a negative project (don't step on me) whereas Rand has a positive project too, recommending that the individual does various things to flourish. She also provides a philosophical foundation for her work and grounds morality - it's ambitious stuff.

I've only read bits of her non-fiction, no fiction.
biccies goes to randian meetups wtf?

that's probably the most messed up thing i've ever read. those movies defined my childhood. the mental image of a bunch of cynical teenage dubstep fans drunkenly cackling at the purest distillation of the magic of cinéma in history is simply disturbing. corpse must have been under the corrupting influence of Saruman and Gríma Wormtongue when he wrote this.
