Being 'into politics '

That shot of Peggy from Mad Men with the juicy comment about missing "SOME of the people" and not being able to say much more for now... I hate the way social media's encouraged people to market themselves. You can picture Moore on her phone or laptop trying to think how best to word it, what 'cool' picture to use, imagining the shocked and intrigued responses.

The language the intercept used to respond to greewalds sacking gave me a similar retch response

Ballard's line about everyone having their own little reality TV show was spot on. It all folds into the ongoing public life of these people. What they write is just one aspect of it. You follow their ups and downs on Twitter, who they get into arguments with, various life events unconnected to their work. And they know it and play into it.

Yeah, I agree. It was embarrassing and insufferable.

i thought Greenwald's flounce was pathetic on its own terms - i read his "exposé" of how badly they treated him and it didnt really stack up

I'm sure that right but I didn't read it I don't care about any of them I was just talking about the language

I still don't know what to make of Greenwald. He claims he isn't a Republican or Trump supporter, but he's constantly parroting their talking points and attacking the Dems. I don't get the impression he's some edgy contrarian, so it must be something else.

Matt Taibbi's someone I feel's a bit more of a contrarian. I was watching some of the show he does for Rolling Stone and he seemed to enjoy being the "Well, actually..." guy whenever his co-host, Halper, said anything negative about the GOP or positive about the Dems.

something something gus bringing up Bourdieu in re gossip and self-branding i.e.

This background information is not merely semiotic; it is institutional and material as well. It includes "information about institutions -- e.g. academies, journals, magazines, galleries, publishers, etc. -- and about persons, their relationships, liaisons and quarrels, information about the ideas and problems which are 'in the air' and circulate orally in gossip and rumour" (32). So the literary product is created by the author; but also by the field of knowledge and institutions into which it is offered.

I think it's significant that Conde Nast no longer considers itself to be in the business of magazines: it is a purveyor and a custodian of brands:

It's something I think that writers for The New Yorker need to realise. They are no longer writers, they are brand contributors, marketing agents.

possibly, I think he's considerably more responsible than Greenwald tho

they're big name left (tho not radical left) journalists operating toward the outer edge of the Overton window of non-fringe journalism

but Taibbi's ultimately interested in the cause - Goldman Sachs as vampire squid or whatever - Greenwald is ultimately interested in Greenwald

I mean I'm sure Taibbi is a big self-promoter like anyone, just that he seems to have a true - and tbh quite antiquated - muckraking spirit as well

very much going back to his days with the eXile

another way of saying it would be that Taibbi strikes as more traditionally left whereas Greenwald could head into if not Bernie/Trump voter territory than Bernie/Rand Paul territory - more interested in just burning things down than building better things

I'm pretty sure everyone who works in journalism is aware of that at this point

from my admittedly outside perspective it seems, understandably, like a great source of consternation for many ppl

but it also it's just the reality that has long been true for most content creators finally reaching the last bastions of prestige journalism

I'd got the impression he was just another of these Putinite lickspittles who makes a great show of being "left wing" and an "anti-imperialist", which fools an awful lot of people who really should know better.

It's essential. Everything you do is an extension of it. If you're a musician, the way you announce albums etc is part of it. You come up with cool graphics and just tweet a date and nothing else. Something cryptic, something mysterious. You just tweet "SOON" and encourage your fans to metldown wondering what it means, what's coming.
