What's your favourite Adele song?

So you read the review knowing perfectly well that's what they think but instead they're saying this other thing, writing a kind of record label press release.

it's true, it really is. soul crushing reading on there, never came away from the site excited about music in any way. the one older guy who did the youtube videos at one point was alright.

If the writer was being honest they'd go yeah, cheap music for plebs. What's going on with her voice? What are the components of it? What's she trying to evoke? Where does she end up?

westlife uni mums. But because it's not the charming suave (but quite boring) ronan keating it just ends up being pastiche soul.

I wouldn't say Adelle's music is cheap, that's why it's so revolting. You can tell she has worked on the timewarp candi staton impression, but to a delitirious degree.

but yes. when i read certain kinds of music writing i feel like they're saying "in the 80s/90s there was such a thing as a metal/techno/whatever listener and if they existed today, this is how they would review this record".

Ronan Keating is awful, the worst singer of all time, no idea of how to attack and interpret a song, just lots of gruff noises that indicate emotions that he seems unable to process or share, terrible

Tom Jones and Beverly Knight did a show at Xmas that we hatewatched for the exact reasons - to just gawp in awe at how two profoundly terrible singers seem to have been embraced by Britain. It's not just the style of singing but the intent behind it that rubs me up the wrong way. I don't mind Adele's voice even when I hate the music and sentiment because I feel like she's at least trying to relate to the song rather than just a technical exercise in vocal competency.

it's like gymnastics, isn't it? You can see them perform tricks and move their bodies in exciting ways but it's ultimately just movement for the sake of movement. No purpose, no substance, just training for the sake of being trained.

similarly @luka we watched Xmas Day TOTP and Fearne & Clara were introducing the acts in a really horrible, reading-aloud-from-Buzzfeed, unnatural way, it was completely unpleasant in every imaginable way - nobody talks like this, nobody responds like this, the insincerity makes everything seem so neutral and bland and unexciting
