My dad just sent me a copy of the first Master and Commander book. It's got a picture of Russell Crowe on the front and a quote from Peter Hitchens on the back.

I can't remember now if there's any sodomy in the first Master and Commander book. I'm pretty sure there's a reference to it... One of the crew is undermined in the eyes of others for being suspected of it, or something.

I've seen four films/tv series set on ships and I get confused as to what happens in each one (except master and commander which I've watched about ten times)...

Master and Commander
To The Ends of the Earth
The North Water
The Terror

Imagine if I'd just accidentally replicated Peter Hitchens' blurb on the back!
"I envy those who have not yet discovered the wonderful books of Patrick O'Brian. They have a whole new world to discover. This is no mere sea story. It is history as it must have felt."

I was thinking of watching The North Water. It's on iPlayer atm. I watched The Terror recently and thought it was great.

It's very similar to The Terror in many ways, except there's no supernatural stuff in it and it's much more stylishly directed.

It's basically hokum but worth watching for Colin Farrell's performance as a psychopathic rapist/murderer.

I really liked the stuff in the Terror about the crew going mad and turning on each other. Didn't think it needed that stupid CGI bear at all.

Master and Commander is probably the most romantic depiction of life onboard a ship out of all of them – the bullying of the lieutenant aside.

but that also illustrates a significant point about the lads in that if you can't hack it, you're fucked. that's it. russell crowe can't do nowt for that poor lad.

In the book there is a bit where Jack is musing to himself on the subject - I forget how it arises, probably a crew member is under suspicion - and he basically concludes that it's not for him but as long as a chap does his duty he sees no particular harm in it... don't ask, don't tell near enough, very enlightened for the times when it was set I thought... perhaps unrealistically so, I dunno.

Anyone feel the superhero thing's finally losing momentum? People have been proclaiming the end for years, but since Marvel completed their big story arc it feels as though the whole thing's been quite muted aside from the few weeks either side of the Spider-Man and The Batman releases.
