LOL! Blake tours the world, received a Grammy Award nomination, and has collaborated or done production work for Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, Vince Staples, Frank Ocean and Bon Iver. I bet lots of others wish they could faceplant like that!

Mercury approved, art school spawned, Arthur Russell wannabe. Tastefully dropping his namby pamby IKEA beats for graphic designers the world over to feast upon like flies on scheiss. Put him in the file with Nicolas Jaar and seal it tightly shut. Success on that level with those artists is a red flag.

im not even against tasteful rare groove inflected beats i mean the bukem sound was still good until end of 95/96.

but James Blake just reminds me of daytime radio 1.

arthur russell is fucking great tho. James Blake's production is super conservative.

For real, and James Blake ripped off his singing style note for note. He eventually started citing Russell as a major inspiration when this was pointed out.

Still love Bukem. Was too young to be attached to any of the drama that went on to give a shit about the crossover into the smoother sounds. I just know that when I got hold of logical progression level 1, it was everything I was looking for at that age. 1st half of that mix still sends shivers. Led me to listening to 1 in the jungle every week.

And I'd never connect Bukem and Blake in any way.

I'm not making a value judgement on James Blake's "worth" (or saying I like his stuff), but to describe him as being a forgotten artist is ludicrous in light of what he's done. views of the cognescenti don't always carry over to the real world.

Personally I'm more interested in how Blake was never properly recognized for being a gentrified version of Joker before the thought of a art student liking Arthur Russell would give me pause but hey

why would they recognise it? UK dance music doesn't work like that anymore. haters gonna hate means the most genteel language is allowed. like i said, got banned from 555-5555 despite not posting since july.

they even want to deconstruct gabba now, ignoring that gabba has always had an experimental vanguard, I mean La Peste and the michelson sisters have basically been making musique concrete hardcore for years, and the fact maggerati is talking about gabber eleganza or whatever. like about 20 years out of fucking date.

I remember hearing the Untold remix on radio at the time and assuming it was Joker doing another variation on Gully Brook Lane/Holly Brook Park.

I think Coki is a genius

I was gonna do a top 50 DMZ tunes when I was working at a music website/promoter and I started by listening to a loooooad of coki tunes. His fusion of dub bass/drums with extreme, grinding buzz saw synths is singular, though much imitated...

Mala was more conservative, no doubt about it, although I think he's a genius too...

(Try not to use the word genius too much cos it only applies to a select few really but you get my drift)
