A final thing about the track itself: cf Sadmanbarty about the child-like softness and feyness of the new rap voice, there's the contrast between the floaty, angelic, half not-there-ness of especially Quavo and Offset, and the super-potent, marauding, phallic-woman cameos by Cardi and Nicki.

there's a great crowley quote about this somewhere. luke called cardi a geezer which was good

simon's single-minded determination to make this thread solely about wanking is as courageous as it is commendable. hats off to him.

in the 60's transcendence was to be attained though a return to the (mythologised) pastoral. nowadays culture suggests it'll only be achieved through unrelenting technical innovation.

kinda interesting how silicon valley took a turn for the (at least pseudo) psychedelic with all the microdosing going on. no doubt as a result of going to burning man

On the one hand, you have a [cough] becoming-immaterial tendency in the imagery - combined with (but not opposed to) a hyper-materialism (Lamborghini, Chanel, Patek, Givenchy etc).

there's a pantheistic inclination running through psychedelia; your inner and outer worlds being one. emotions and ideas taking material form. this exaggerated, all engulfing materialism is like that; ego and accomplishment manifest physically.

it's partly steve jobs influence but more generally you actually get lots of nerds into psychedelics. they synergise so well with abstract thought, conceptualisation, science-fiction etc. you just get these vast sweeps of terrain to swoop over, take in so much at a single glance becasue the information is so tightly compressed and coming so quickly.... loads of coders take them, loads of science bods (francis crick most famously)

every technology has an ideal form and a limit to it's trajectory and it all ends in dematerialisation- it is the end point and goal for so many different lines of development-
for instance transport technology aspires to teleportation.
communication technology aspires to telepathy and transcendence of langauge-pure signal with nothing lost in translation, a one to one match of what is conveyed to what is received.

time and space are annoying. they keep us from what we want.

Certainly, sex as the central metaphor of dancing seems remoter than ever. Rave dancing doesn’t bump and grind from the hip; it’s abandoned the model of genital sexuality altogether for a kind of polymorphous perverse frenzy. It’s a dance of tics and twitches, jerks and spasms, the agitation of a body broken down into individual components, then re-integrated at the level of the entire dancefloor. Each sub-individual part (a limb, a hand cocked like a pistol) is a cog in a collective desiring machine

dematerialisation

there is a real tangible excitement in the opening of the garage one when he's talking about turning on the radio and trying to identify this strange sound coming out. lee loves it too.

plenty of bits from that 1992 essay that fit in here actually.

it’s a quest to reach escape velocity.

The Aesthetic Of Disappearance

Sampled and modulated on a keyboard, they become a barrage of intensities without pretext or context, shudders and shivers that are not so much inhuman as infra-human.

Ardcore abolishes narrative: instead of tension/climax/release, it offers a thousand plateaux of crescendo, an endless successions of NOWs.

This emergent anti-culture of instantaneity will be inhabited by a new breed of schizophrenic subject, whose ego is “made up of a series of little deaths and partial identities”.

thread recap

so far we've got dematerialisation has resulted in:

the distortion of time (timbaland, insomnia, tinashe, jeremih)

the erosion of sexuality (infantilisation, rave dancing, cuckolding)

smoothing of textures (smoothness, t1000, liquid)

what am i missing?
