the dematerialized sublime. it's no longer storms on the ocean or really tall mountains or ancient civilizations or whatever, it's now ...whatever the internet equivalent is.

It was always nostalgic/backwards facing though wasn't it? AOL. Early iterations of Windows. Netscape Navigator. Sega Megadrive. About childhood in a way, and a child's imagination engaging with those 2d spaces flashing on the screen. Monitor light in a dark room.

arguably it's the limitless cultural archive that that chapter of retromania talks about. not as a portal to any one particular time / place, but as an entity of its own.

which might seem related to the point about chillwave being nostalgic / backwards facing, but I think the way you hear things through this archive can be so different from how they were experienced during their cultural moment that it can lead to very different music.

Incredibly high resolution images of those same phenomena, the weather in GTA and Red Dead.

I've got an article on this sort of thing open in another tab, might be worth its own thread.

The impossible architecture of video games

There is a saying in architecture that no building is unbuildable, only unbuilt. Structures may be impossible in the here and now, but have the potential to exist given enough time or technological development: a futuristic cityscape, a spacefaring megastructure, the ruins of an alien civilisation. However, there are also buildings that defy the physical laws of space. It is not an issue that they could not exist, but that they should not. Their forms bend and warp in unthinkable ways; dream-like structures that push spatial logic to its breaking point.

You ever play that game which was just a cube with an entire world on it? You grew plants and whatnot.

deconstructed club 2008 transformers aesthetics claim another victim

this time it's my favorite producer under 30, someone who i thought was headed on a decidedly different, more interesting route

appreciate this link/continuity being made explicit.

conceptronica -> chillwave continuum
chino amobi -> diamond black hearted boy
elysia crampton -> e+e
yves tumor -> teams
babyfather -> hype williams
hi fi hi concept james -> lo fi b-movie soundtrack james
'glass and metal in every direction' -> 'burning loud in a smoky room'

like people really did just transition from one to the other. and they emphasised very different sonics, cultural reference points and marketed themselves in pretty different ways. it's something i've spent lots of time thinking about re:trying to engage with music from the 2010's, from the time i've come up in, rather than just retreating into an inaccessible past.

the concepticons (and, frankly, People Who Care Too Much About Hardcore; people who equate Club = Forward = Worth Valorising/Important) were shife with us for being 'stoned escapists'. someone i tried connecting with via internet club was hating on color ocean road for that reason; was trying to tell me they were all about GOOD SOUND DESIGN AND LOUD DRUMS.
and that was 2014?
mark my words that shit is going to age wayyy worse than the best 20 Minute Chillwave Zoners.

some questions.
what if certain shit is just not worth engaging with?
what if not everything has to be 100% present moment, where is the allowance for time slippage, gently being out of sync?
what if not every release has to be engaging novel ideas, but a few solid ones can be slowly fucked with over the course of prolific years?
