'chillwave continuum'?

The cover for that Jam City album is brilliant, imo. It communicates so many things. The corporate lobby, the glass, the plants contained by the marble, the crashed but immaculate motorcycle with no rider in sight. It might have appeared in 2012, but it feels very 'now'.

i'm personally all for the quiet turn against night slugs in general. although main attrakionz being on that record was great and WUT is still the shit. both overlap w the chillwave continuum, though. wondering what determined/determines? whether one went/goes? from chillwaver to concepticon.

absolutely adore this kind of free improv with samplers. was HUGE on this when it came out. this is like delta sleep inducing peptide or big city orchestra with an *entirely* different set of textures. there's a sort of a-musical freedom here with what are originally very tonally 'correct' commercial music cues/interstitials. the voices getting stretched into mp3 infinity.

tbf I also thought anything that wasn't on piero scaruffi's "100 greatest rock albums" list was stupid at the time
energy flash and retromania are actually the only books I've read. of his, but also just in general.

lean into this energy.

great way to put it. that's a major preoccupation of mine i guess.

that's also what's great about mid 80s hip hop and early 90s hardcore. a lot of the source material is ridiculously corny, yet when it's distorted through scratching, edits, etc. that quality ends up making it more insane, not less.

also relates to the idea of being intentionally "stupid" musically. although since i'm terrible at proper musician discernment (like what key something is in) i don't even have to pretend or unlearn anything.

"but however.. His producing is sometimes soooo way off..Like this one. Piano-melody starting at 3 min + is off-key.. So is the female-vocals.. "

Can name about 100 hardcore tracks from BITD that were the same. It was all about the music back then mate who gave a shite if it was in key.

@MrLien2U Shit, some times it was just because it was off key that it would give you the shivers and rush you off like crazy.

You were trying to decide which of the 14 or 15 autechre threads to post it on. Then settled for this one!

I was going to post in the chat telling them about mvuent, their superfan and recommending they check out the autechre threads on dissensus but you have to download apps before you can go in the chatroom

similar to this, one of the greatest albums of the 2010s

I've listened to the first four songs and it's got some fun ideas but I don't understand how you don't get annoyed with it, all the channel surfing

lol that's a much more charitable take than i would have expected

but yeah i can't listen to more than a few tracks at a time before it feels like information overload. there are some really beautiful, chilling moments though. i'd have to think about how to "pitch" that album but this is an earlier, simpler / more tentative deployment of that same insane sampling language:

(e.g. track 10)

I think I've usually been charitable towards this stuff. I always really liked the idea of it and thought it was really interesting terrain to explore. That it needed to be done and was inevitable. I just could never really manage to listen to it

I love Jam City, I know it's very easy to hate on Night Slugs but I think he's got something special about his music
