But yeah of course it would be totally unfair to single out this author or any other. It's a drip drip drip over years and if one happens to be the one whose drip overflows the dam then they are just unlucky.

It's quite a ferment, and not surprising that it calls for interpreters and seers...

like this way of expressing it. all in all, there's lots of aspects of 'our' culture that are changing quickly at the moment, I mean broadly UK and US, I don't think some of this applies much outside of that to be honest, or at least I don't know. Interpretation and finding a way through an explosion of both viewpoints and real-life behaviour is important and useful / incredibly destructive depending on who's doing it

the other thing that's going on is that all this gender stuff is pretty unavoidable, at least in the real-life circles i move in, because people bring it up all the bloody time as a topic or an annotation to conversation. so you kind of need to take a position on it, or at least figure out a good way to maneuver around it.

Yeah we can't pretend that online discourses don't alter people's behaviors, interpretations of behaviors, desires, interpretation of desires, etc

I guess I'll read both, like I did with the Shon Faye and Kathleen Stock ones.

I have never liked Laurie Penny that much, but I guess they may have got better.

I'll read none of them. The British left is a bunch of abject disavowing alt right headcases, each and every one.

Ok, I'm not being entirely serious there, but the fact that their analyses can't deviate from british state policy - the fact that they fell for the press addressing the very real problem of antisemitism in the LP without failing to mention that this was used by mainly non-Jewish philosemites for a clash of civilisations war to let islamophobia to slide (in both the parties!) says miles. If you're going to be driven out of public life, you shouldn't make it easy for yourself, but most of these posh kids never will.

I'm not one for parliamentary cretinism, as you well know. But the fact that people are still shocked about Mr. Normal and Nusrat Khan says so much about how it's impossible to extract Brits from their moribund two party fetish.

it's more or less the main thing that's going on culturally at the moment i think. sometimes people are still ashamed of it, but the movement of ideas you've read online into real-life conversational space is a step-change

Ben Watson had her reading from it at the Betsey Trotwood on Friday. I wasn't there. I think I was hungover that day. it's being broadcast on Resonance this Wednesday though.

Absolute howler this. Is he turning liberal in his old age?

i've read this whole fucking thread up to here in one go, and this post is making my laugh my head off. absolutely amazing
i didn't know this joseph geezer in the old days but i was getting quite into some of the plotlines in that thread. neon barty coming in like a good lad, teaming up with the luka father figure to hold out the olive branch, coaxing him onside, being nice, inviting him to be one of the lads, and then BOOM! six paragraphs of hostility. love it. luka make it happen again

No thanks. It's akin to my dad coming to my house munted on garys at 9 AM.

Not that my dad would, because he's a disciplinarian, but...

i havent listened to this myself but generally one of the things i like about Ben's band is that its' not age appropriate behaviour.
they're all pensioners and i think its very touching and very sweet to see them get together and play with all their toys and make
silly sounds.

It's still wank, not even appropriate for the pentioner proletariat.
