There's a lot going on in this gesture, exasperation, guilt and regret for hurting his kid. Love the gold room scenes, they:re what take the movie into orbit. Gilded malevolence.

That's a cool interpretation. I've always taken it as him having been destined to end up there, or as there being some sort of temporal loop. Yours makes more sense though. Also makes you wonder how many of the people in the photo were actually there and and how many have been claimed.

Also in the books it takes him ages to go nuts in the film he's practically planning their murders within a week

Part of the genius of it is that the supernatural stuff is shot as blankly as the "real" stuff.

He comes round a corner and the corridor is full of unexplainable party stuff. It's just "real".
