Mark Fell is appreciated. He’s a bit hit and miss, can fall into abstraction (conceptronica?) sometimes for my tastes, but when he hits he’s a game changer.

What I love and respect about Fell are how his self-confessed obsessions and lived experience of previous eras and various sound signatures are all accumulatively ingrained in the sounds he programs today. Eg drum compression, percussion patterns and NY/NJ House, which became templates for SND’s bottom-end heavy thump. Equally, anyone who can sample & amalgamate N.U.M speeches into transcendent House (with Sprinkles) is not to be snorted at.

Really well done piece here on his evolution and influences, good fun going through the music too...

Treanor and Lazar seem to be getting increasingly straightforward and danceable with each release.

I don't really like that tune. The music itself doesn't do much for me, and the sample feels a bit tacked on. I love 'Complete Spiral' though.

He did a Fennesz remix years ago which I liked apart from he stuck MLK's Dream speech over the top...

I love 'Complete Spiral' though.

It's a beast and definitely an ace in any pack, whole of one side and to have the ears to know that the groove can go on longer than most tracks worth a damn too. It passes the sound system test like fisted velvet, if that makes any sense.

Mark Fell is semi-genius. His Sensate Focus stuff was perfect, I believe this one is with Winston Hazel:

Some of the of the other stuff posted here gets a bit grating, though. Too much reverb

Still, SND was the best electronica act ever out of the UK, esp their early more swampy less digital sounding stuff.

I never tire of those early records, esp 'Stdio'. Flow is just incredible. The perfect soundtrack to the ultra bright 'corona blue' skies of lately. Best outcome of the click'n'cuts era.

Here's a recent one I quite like as well with a certain silliness possibly because of the Errorsmith colab:

There's some great interviews linked to earlier in the thread. One of the very few musicians who can actually talk about music in a meaningful way.

He's on that Urbanomic podcast once in a while, the one catalog was on about. Remember he talked about that Sensate Focus track that was posted too. Robin Mackay said it was the only music he could read to along with Eliane Radigue or something. It is a bit muzak-y.

He says some good stuff on that podcast, about the UK education system and what's wrong with it, he's just kinda down to earth and is speaking from his own actual experience, which is recreshing. I have tried getting into the senate focus tracks, I like the odd one. Not listened to any SND tho, maybe that would be more up my street

I can't read listening to music at all. I'd say I could maybe read to Eno at incredibly low volume, but even that would be distracting.
