The Guardian has this mad idea that we are all staying at home. But there's armies of people who still have to go to work. Even if there was a serious Wuhan style lockdown you would still need significant numbers of people going out to work. Not just doctors and nurses and other hospital staff like porters and cleaners but all sorts of other people too.

It's really weird. Like a kind of denial of reality.

We need major government work programmes. I told my sister to pass thIs on to the higher ups. The amount of jobless people is going to be colossal. I want to be on a government gravedigging chain gang. Or whatever it is. Whatever needs doing. Let's get it started.

it's the financial aspect which i find scary. i've no idea how that will work out.

most of me still thinks that it's a bit like a jungian psychic/UFO invasion from the "alien" far east

thought these remarks i read were interesting with regards to wuhan:

"I'm neither a virologist nor an epidemiologist, but something that hasn't been mentioned in any reports I've read so far - and which I think may be affecting the mortality rate in both Hubei and in China as a whole - is that the Chinese are the world's largest consumers of tobacco.

The country is estimated to have 312 million adult smokers and is in the midst of a lung cancer epidemic on an unprecedented scale (Parascandola and Xaio, 2019). It accounts for nearly one-third of the world's smokers and 40 percent of the world's tobacco consumption. Over half of all Chinese men smoke.

I wonder whether, in the fullness of time, we might discover that the poor underlying pulmonary health of many Chinese patients, particularly men, meant that Covid-19 affected them more acutely than it did patients in other countries and regions where decades of effective public health education has made smoking much less prevalent.

This is not to say, of course, that we shouldn't be doing everything we can to prevent transmission or spread of this virus."

and this

"Not to mention the appalling air quality in many urban centres, in part due to Chinese factories using banned chemicals."

that might explain the high percentages coming out of china - but then italy's death toll is now higher they say...

Do the Italians like more fags than other Europeans? I want more info on the precise start of it all, that's still hazy. So it was live animals kept badly, animals that would not normally be farmed, and there was some accelerated agriculture policy behind it? So it's like bse but worse? Why is there nothing in the telly about this? Is it cos China have it locked?

Another couple things I've seen that caught my eye:

1. Paste ups on a stairwell, fresh risograph, pastel colours. 'we don't accept dirty hands, let's not accept dirty governments' or similar

2. A woman sitting on a bench rocking a pushchair, cooing to baby. Woman has full mask on, only eyes visible. Baby is under a full plastic sheet

The theory is it was from the Wuhan wet market where they sell and slaughter all sorts of exotic animals including bats and pangolins. But they have closed down the market and I heard they tore it down too.

They assume it came from a bat cos it is similar to a corona virus endemic to bats.

Could do with a good long read on this with all the fancy science.

was reading this and thought it was quite interesting:

Some question why Italy was caught off guard when the virus outbreak was revealed on Feb. 21.

Remuzzi says he is now hearing information about it from general practitioners. "They remember having seen very strange pneumonia, very severe, particularly in old people in December and even November," he says. "This means that the virus was circulating, at least in [the northern region of] Lombardy and before we were aware of this outbreak occurring in China."

Has impact in Russia been pretty minimal tho? There goes the fags theory

Not really, you still have to transmit and spread the virus. It's not smoking alone. It's the impact of the virus on smokers that is being posited.

So whys it not spread bad in Russia?

Dunno. But you could ask the same question of any number of countries. Why not India? Why not Australia to a significant degree? They may only be weeks behind in the timeline. This is still developing and it's hard to draw any conclusions.
