I was thinking this too, but yyaldrin, being Dutch, just went ahead and asked it.

i was hesitating tho cos it's a bit of a taboo isn't it? but well what if patty knows the secret and we can all turn into bohemians having girlfriends on all continents.

let me know if you need some help with the import export business patty. i've done my four years of east-germany.

Fair enough. Most of my cousins did that for a few years. I suppose the reality is most people don't actually want that life when it's offered to them. Ive always hated travelling so it's not for me.

Ok fellas. Pay attention cos I'm only gonna say this once.

Have TEFL, will travel.

Aww, I was hoping you'd say something more realistic and achievable, like you inherited vast wealth from an obscure aristocratic relative or used the proceeds from a paper round to speculate on South African diamond mines.

If only. Have been told I should release my music cos apparently I'm not bad at making tunes but there's a weird mental block there that I can't quite explain. Even had a decent label in Berlin ready to go on an LP and an EP. Guess that would be a nice way to get by. For a while at least.

Teaching's a nice job though. Especially here. Way more fun than the krauts that's for sure!

Have left São Pau for now, but here's a few reflections:
Great stuff, reminds me of my experiences of Mexico City almost 20 years back. My girlfriend went to live in Mexico and we met up in MC and everyone had all these tips about how to not get killed. Like only get in a taxi you ordered - but when I landed I just got a random one and, although he drove like an absolute fucking nutter (he actually drove over a central reservation to overtake a queue of cars and run a red light), it was otherwise fine. Great trip, we hitchhiked round Oahaka (sp?) although didn't get too far - I think that area is a lot more dangerous now. In the interest of balance I should say that pretty much everyone else who went to visit her did get mugged in Mexico City though.

Someone on reddit posted about how they taught english in Taiwan, where life is so cheap they were saving thousands of pounds/dollars a month. They almost literally couldn't spend what they made.

I worry that moving abroad I'd sever my few remaining social connections and live in an isolation chamber, though.

That's the big problem with travelling. That's why after coming back from being away last time I said I'd never do it again. It's very hollow. But you would have sex and get a sun tan.mget drunk a lot. Etc etc.

All my cousins are New Zealanders. They pretty much all ended up making nice big piles of money in Japan and Korea and, more recently, China. I don't know if those places are the best for a last 30 something blow out though corpse. One last blast of debauchery before you get too old haggard and disgusting to have sex ever again. Go and join patty in Brazil and make us jealous by posting lots of pictures of rainforest and beach and that

I've been living in Vietnam the past 5 years (with a year break between in Japan) everyone gets drunk all the time, drives scooters under the influence and earns loads of money. It's a bit of a luxury trap though, like a being a drug dealer but less cool. I'm definitely ready to move on but had an amazing time.
