So I found the 400 year old (give or take 200 years either way) Yew tree in these woods nearby.

Actually very easy to find and distinctive, cos it stands out quite a bit from the others around it

It's got something special about it straightaway, huge craggy trunk, with very clear signs of "old"

Like a lot of trees, it has dead bits co-mingling with living bits, but I don't think I've seen one quite as pronounced as this.

Some of the contortions in the wood are quite spooky, I was seeing body shapes and faces all over the place.

Like this "leg"

And then these very Lovecraftian/Alien holes and projections

I got this strong sense of frozen lava, cos its all very solid but also a lot of circles and flow lines.

And also felt like there was something inside it.

You saw those photos of that old olive tree in our village @catalog? Surprisingly how similar their trunks look now even though a yew and an olive tree are totally different in the normal course of events.

Yeah, that similar hard curve look definitely. Some of the wood of the yew was surprisingly shiny and healthy looking. I believe they were used to make longbows for a long time cod thed wood is so hard.

Yeah must be. It was gorgeous looking wood up close, lots of marbling and tone, like when you go in a decent old pub and there's characterful Wood all over the place.

Possibly...

Very strong sense of something emerging from it. Like a gas or some kind of ooze.

The "oozey anthem" green did cross my mind actually, cos there was this green film over parts of the trunk.

The feeling of something being there is strong cos in order to get up close, you have to cross the membrane of the branches that are hanging down.

So it feels quite enclosed.

And the shapes are just very odd. Also the colours, very abrupt shifts in tone.

Still catching up ( so many threads )

Thanks Version. Yeah trees !
Got to get down into those Japanese forests w their ancients ...

And have been working up a new long piece based on this ' Secret life Of Forests '
idea(s) around them communicating clicks among their roots enmeshed together by fungi, helping each other as needed.
Was thinking of our islands before white people came.

First heard about it in this

Synth heavy score by Stevie Wonder of all people.

Apparently the plant world communicates internationally. Sending data across (or under?) oceans.
Yep, Stevie was right there.
Pretty popular title here in it's time

Fresh from leaving politics, the most high-profile face of the campaign to leave the European Union has joined the advisory board of a Dutch carbon offset company aiming to plant three trillion trees by 2030.
Yet Farage said the attraction of the new role, as an adviser and spokesman with Amsterdam-listed carbon offset company Dutch Green Business (DGB), was about conservation and nature rather than just combating climate change - on which he says the science is still not completely settled.

"I think people will want to plant trees and increase biodiversity through DGB who are actually quite sceptical about climate change. Equally there will be others who are very concerned about it," the 57-year-old told Reuters.

"If their motivations are more about biodiversity than they are about climate change, so what?" he said.
DGB CEO Selwyn Duijvestijn said the very image that made Farage appear an unlikely choice would help to broaden the company's message to reach people beyond those traditionally interested in nature.

"50% of the world love the Greta Thunbergs of this world to bring them the message that nature is important, but then there is the other 50% ... the oil workers in Texas for instance ... and they would rather listen to Nigel," Duijvestijn said.

Yet some established figures in the carbon market expressed concern over the appointment.

"A tree is a wondrous thing that shelters, feeds, and protects all living things. It even offers shade to the axmen who destroy it.”

“We’ve learned a little about a few of them, in isolation. But nothing is less isolated or more social than a tree.”

“For there is hope of a tree, if it goes down, that it will sprout again, and that its tender branches will not cease. Though the root grows old in the earth, and the stock dies in the ground, at the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs. But man, man wastes away and dies and gives up the ghost, and where is he?”

Got sent a link to another article about this scientist, Suzanne Simard, mentioned in the article posted by Version. The inspiration for the Sigourney Weaver character in Avatar. And also for one of the main characters in Richard Powers' Overstory (which I've got, but not read yet).

There's now a documentary film about her

And she's got a book which sounds good

I think this ancient yew tree I've found in the nearby woods could be described as a mother tree, except I think it's male (cos it has no red berries).
