Dub

One thing that's I guess tangential but pretty fascinating to me

The impact of dub approach, aesthetic, technique, mentality, beyond reggae

I'm sure this must have come up in other threads, but

One of the clearest markers distinguishing early disco, disco proper, from later disco and especially the post-disco early 80s is the rise of dub aesthetic + technique. See a Levan remix ca. 78-79 vs one a couple years later.

And from cutting edge dance music (and I guess guitar music, via post-punk) to the mass proliferation of dub approach in popular music generally to the point where it's so ubiquitous as to be part of the DNA (like, yes, 130 bpm, or what have you)

Especially interesting bc dub 1) is not inherently commercial, possibly even anti-commercial, and 2) if not inherently druggy, then certainly related to altered states of consciousness, be they thru drugs or spirituality or both

And yet it was a massive (possibly the single biggest, after 4 to the floor) influence on virtually all modern dance music and to some extent pop music generally

The book about Eno I'm reading talks about his infatuation with King Tubby/Lee Perry and how that informed his approach in the studio afterwards. He learned how to do the process from a reggae producer, and he was going to do a record with Aswad at one point. The process being recording all the tracks and then cutting stuff in and out, treating everything with effects, etc.

I dunno what happened but I used to love jamaican music and then I went right off it and now I've got an active aversion to it. Never listen to it. Weird.

I suspect it's the specific weed infused spirituality starts to feel more like a state of arrested development than an end in itself. A form of complacency and stalled progress. A kind of gross self satisfied stupour, sucking your own cock

It seems almost as boring and dusty to me as rock n roll. Perhaps it's the reverence around it?

Also I suppose it's been put through the ringer of shite Euro/Yank producers.

Maybe it's just like when you love eating a particular food for a while, eat too much of it, and totally go off it, associating the food itself with boredom.

A film accretes around your ears, you can't hear the intricacies of the music, only the template you've become bored of.

does it have anything to do with that time you were the mc for heatwave and you were shagging all those girls at the after parties?
