I'm biased cos I'm living there now, but Birmingham is way friendlier than London on an everyday basis (I think London can go either way; when I said the South, I meant the rest of it). Nottingham too. Dunno about the other places from first hand experience tbh.

For the most part definitely - that's a good way of putting it. I'd say 95% friendly, 5% terrifying...but that's inflected through where the UK is right now.

All places have their good and bad but London outprices most of it's good souls. The richer the place the colder people tend to be, in the UK at least.

definitely some truth to that.

I've been to some cold places that are economically fucked, though. North Yorkshire, for example.

Yeah places with richer history tend to have stronger poor communities. So Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool etc. All pretty multiculti and rich in their own respective ways. Places like barrow in furness, where I spent a tiny bit of time are hell holes. Destitute and forgotten. As I said before, Yorkshire can fuck off.

I'm kinda joking about Liverpool, I mean, she did say that but she's only been there for one day as far as I know, it's hardly a comprehensive view.

I guess I'm more aligned with their way of thinking than someone from one of the coldest countries in both temperature and spirit in the world.
Russia? Where Liza comes from it reaches 35 most summers and I'm surprised you say that about their spirit, in my experience (and I've been there three or four times and to Moscow, Chelyabinsk, Yekaterinberg and Kusar) they are shy but once you're past that initial thing they are one of the friendliest and warmest people I've met and they back that up with - I dunno - cooking for you, buying you stuff, taking you places etc really generous and hospitable.

I used to go out with a girl from Birmingham, had a lot of mad adventures there and it was pretty friendly now I come to think of it. Nottingham was where I went to university but I didn't find it especially friendly - then again everyone hates students so maybe that's not a fair representation.

The Birmingham accent makes everyone seem friendly, warm, lovely, approachable, harmless, totally thick.

Patty seems to have aquired the mad belief that there are no poor people in London.

The association of friendliness and approachableness with thickness, as with the association of compromise with weakness, is a curious one that seems to come from a really dull place. Not sure why you're repeating a Channel 5-level cliche, tbh.

On the other hand, this week had been so utterly toxic, that I think most of us have more than a little spare anger and contempt to go around.

Was just lashing out in defence of the North lol.

Gets a bad rap but I had a great time there for about 9 months around 2001. My first big clubbing experiences ever were down at the custard factory. Saw aphex live in the emptied out pool once. Blinder.

Very southern way of thinking

But not one I'm making. Just some weird paranoid supposition baboon has come to.

Refugees from the north are fine. People who were born and raised there but escaped to London to get away from the meaness and spite and small mindedness.

A quite remarkable flipping of the truth. This is not the House of Commons, you know. Originally you took bizarre, frothing exception to me pointing out that England isn't that friendly, and slowly your arena of alleged friendliness has been whittled down solely to London, with all outside cast either as spiteful or stupid, with their factories and their odd accents. I'm waiting for the postcodes of affability to be strictly defined.

Anyways, in the spirit of aggressive parochialism, I'm off to watch Wales in the rugby, sadly only on TV.
