Dog went AWOL yesterday, lost in the mists up on the moors by our dog walker. I left work early and wife too, to go and look. Cue frantic Facebook posts and sitting in last seen place with van doors open and food and our clothes as scent.

We got a load of help from a tracking service on Facebook, very reassuring and helpful. I was out on the moors til 4am, playing sudoku and listening to classic fm. Periodically driving off to get warm and a phone signal.

He toddled home just after 4 (where my wife was waiting, front door open, all lights on) having been out of pocket 19 hours. Seems he took the long way around, sticking to streams, fields, was covered in brambles.

Trip to vet just now cos he was shaking and breathing fast but seems OK. Felt like the universe smiled on us a bit, especially after reading other horror stories. This voluntary tracking group were amazing, we'll make a donation.

Glad it worked out, catalog, it's a nightmare when pets get loose. amazing how some animals have a natural sense of finding their way home.

You can microchip your pet, so they can be identified if someone finds a lost dog or cat and brings it to a vet. maybe someday they'll include a GPS and you'll be able to track it on your phone.

Well, you and Bill Gates, of course.

Yeah thanks, he is microchipped and we've now just bought a GPS tracker for his collar.

He seems some way back to normal, I let him off the lead in a park and he went bounding around chasing birds.

We've sacked the dog walker, was a big of a decision for us, maybe the wrong one, but there you go.

Did the dog walker say how it happened? Or is it common to leave dogs off the lead and this time it just wandered off?

So he is normally off lead with her. And she said they leave them off and do a count every 200 metres or so, and he was missing when they did one.

But it's 12 dogs (3 walkers as a team) so quite a lot going on.

And to give you an idea of the place, this is what it looked like when my wife got up there a couple hours later. It's a really vast space and the mist was really thick

So could have been anything really. Wwe think he maybe got frightened of the mist and decided he wasn't up fof it, but she said he's been up there in bad weather before.

Could have been anything really, and we're ambivalent about sacking her, but we felt we needed to do something. Also, we were pissed off cos she did not boost the missing post in Facebook, basically went completely silent, which is understandable, but still.

Cos ultimately it was the Facebook exposure which led to the sightings.
