Re: Third invoking Benji, it's all about the curation of 'vibes' isn't it? It's a corny sounding thing that when misapplied ends up with you promoting the ambiguous 'influencer' culture but there's a truth to it.

Gilles didn't just play his tastes, he curated and consciously warped around a thing that was lush, classy (and as we know classy can be both exclusionary and inviting) and felt warm. Benji being his crate guy just wasn't the same, he thought it was about the records and about the taste and about the sense of new, no idea how to format or make it make sense.

I will say I gravitated more to Benji in my BBC Listening phase than Gilles but that's because the Gilles stuff was so adult oriented and jazzy and never felt enthusiastic. Also I don't trust anyone who thinks Cuba is good musically; it's just a ploy to avoid interacting with countries where reggaeton and cumbia exist.

Avoiding reggaeton and Cumbia seems sensible, but otherwise, good points. He's got a Brazil fetish too which I don't get off on at all.

Genuine q. is there any music that is not exclusionary and inviting simultaneously? we all want to say how jungle is not exclusionary, but it kind of is in the sense that many ravers obviously felt excluded from it, not to mention trance/prog house and mainstream house fans.

We also see this with hip hop, now Jay-Z's blueprint album is being described as a golden age. unthinkable and totally barmy to me, bbut that's how it is!

To a point but think of what you miss out on. He needs to bridge it back to jazziness in order for it to make sense and that excludes a lot.

Where's Gilles bachata mixes? Those would work perfectly but he doesn't, b/c it isn't integrated into his system yet. Feels like a waste.

Eh?

You high? He comes from the jazz dance scene. Cuba makes incredible music for dancing. All that percussion? Ever heard of a little band called Irakere?

He used to play all kinds of trad Latin stuff Inc bachata at his parties. Probably still does.

Wobble was still too tied to the trudging half-step for me, I remember wishing it would crossbreed with post-Dilla wonky beats, or footwork, and that the Hessle lot had intensified this sort of approach instead of going all Berlin:

bandz ahoy

Absolute ledge this guy.

I read recently that when he was young he lived on the streets and got stabbed and almost died. Instantly doubling his ledge points in my eyes. (He also punched a paparazzi.)

Pharrell is a Quai fan, also. So suck it.

wobble was 2007-2009 for me, markomen vs j kenzo braindrop mixes. after that you're right, the inability to break out of the halfstep template depleted any possibilities it may have had. yeah, untold was the man out of the hessle guys. untouchable for a while. i remember that tune, a cracker.

Patty you're not allowed to respond to any of my posts until you properly respond to Odai/Web in the "listen to this" thread, and I encourage everyone to shun Patty until he does due diligence.

You're right, but I mean so much in the sense of there being a 'status' about the music. It's unintentionally akin to the "Champagne Crowd" mythos of a lot of UK Dance music.

This doesn't exist in quite the same way as it does in the US because that schism is more adeptly in rock and jazz and R&B than electronic dance music.

Can anyone vouch for this OwlyHead fella? One minute he's dissing a whole country's music in one fell swoop and the next he's calling the shots like he thinks he's pol pot.
