Another 90s Hype Thread - Acid Jazz + Gilles Peterson

Listen, just because he writes expertly crafted, well informed, pithy observations on the entire history of hip hop. Just because he commands a founding father-earned respect from all, immunizing him against scrutiny while never letting the fact go to his head and generally being a cool dude, doesn't mean... Eh I'll go and give it another listen

(I know crowley luke)

Now who is this Wu Tong you speak of?

Eh? He gets held to account! Just like everybody else. Check the sadness thread. I like everybody here but we're all quite damaged and bent out of shape. Sometimes you have to let it slide! Third daid he was going to turn corpse into an ottoman eunuch! Lol we're always acting out, for better or for worse

Once again my feigned indignance has missed its mark. Sometimes it's hard to put across that you're only kidding in text. His post made me laugh. And I get that you're all cunts. That's why I come here every day.

Said it before and I'll say it again, take me with a pinch of salt breh

Thank you Barty

Also I'm the only person of hispanic heritage here (mother's Puerto Rican) I'm allowed my bit of jingoism. Hell, Luke writes off the entirety of the Spanish in the European theater.

for me it isn't even the elegance or privilege of these people, i can certainly appreciate the need to occasionally go to a night with an elegant vibey crowd, its their value set and their smug condescension towards anyone a bit ruffneck that pisses me off.

and of course most of the records the gilles peterson types fetishise are just in londons black music dna anyway, most people in hardcore-jungle know that stuff, otherwise they wouldn't be sampling it. gilles himself though is alright I've heard, i'm more thinking about the crowds he attracts.

it's like Norman Jay, I really rate him as a selector, he's turned me onto some good stuff but i wouldn't be caught dead at a good times night really, well, maybe when I'm 50. and yeah i know norman jay is black - like i said i rate the fella and he has a perfect sunday evening radio voice. he can play at my gabba bash all the phillie soul he wants I'm all down for that.

But I think people like Peterson and Norman Jay are much more grounded in eclecticism than their fans for which eclecticism is a very specific 70s value set. I mean Gilles likes Lil Wayne for christ's sake i heard!

I don't think this is particularly true, what are you basing it on? Most of the people I've encountered, who are into people like Gilles & Norman J, generally have a genuinely open mindset when it comes to music. Sure, in every 'scene' you'll have insular types, but when compared with many of its' neighbouring cliques, it hardly seems worth levelling that particular accusation at Gilles' demographic, whatever that would be, and you cant really compare eclecticism in the 1990s to post internet years.

I think people are often going to gravitate towards harder or softer forms of entertainment, but that's more of a personal preference type thing. I think harder, more extreme forms of music can mask a myriad of shittyness behind their inaccessibility. Softer forms, have less room to hide in. That's partially why a lot of acid jazz sucks. It's plain to see it's a tepid reheated mishmash of something better. If it was truly acid jazz, as in an updating of avant-garde jazz, it would have a lot less detractors for example.

Maybe the problem with Acid Jazz is that it's both too bland and not bland enough, ersatz 70s postures but shying away from the true deracinated penthouse nihilism of Smooth Jazz:

Anyone else notice that firefinga only posted twice in this thread. Did we upset him?

I can't be upset by anything being posted on internet message boards to be frankly.

It's just like I wrote in an earlier post in this thread: I actually don't know crap about Acid Jazz other than a handful of hyped names and that it was a hype-topic in the 90s music press. :)

https://chrisbangs.typepad.com/chris_bangs_blog_happy/acid-jazz-how-it-started.html

"I was with Chris Bangs at one of Nicky Holloway’s nights. One room, five DJs, 1,000 people. Paul Oakenfold was before us. He was wearing a smily t-shirt and on it was ‘Get on one matey, acid’. Everyone was going nuts listening to acid tracks by Phuture. Chris Bangs and I were like, ‘Fucking hell, this is wild, what are we going to play? We’re on next’. There was a fusion of rare groove, acid house and growth in club culture that was making it quite an interesting period. Oakenfold left everyone in rapture, we put on this old 7-inch by Mickey & the Soul Generation which was a rare groove record with a mad rock guitar intro and no beat. I started vary speeding it so it sounded all warped. Chris got on the microphone and said, ‘If that was acid house, this is acid jazz’. "

Maybe acid jazz can be redeemed and rebuilt from first principles, playing loads of mad free jazz in a rave context...

Was broken beat Giles Peterson too? The majority of broken beat tunes I hear are right up my street.
