This is the Patty & Corpsey Show. The name comes from the noble native America people's, the Iroquois, mixed with jam, as in, sweet jam session. Jay Kay was ahead of the game with his concern for the environment (emergency on planet earth) and willingness to learn from the indigenous peoples of the earth and what their ancient ways of life can teach us (the didgeridoo in 'when you gonna learn") let's give it up for the greatest jazz-funk-soul band of all time. Take it away boys.

... their band logo is the Buffalo Man, which is based on the Greek Minotaur myth. Jay Kay, who first sketched the logo, said of it: "I really identify with Theseus. In fact, I'd say I am the most similar person to Theseus to come out of Stretford in the past 50 years."

This video is so ridiculous, and all from a man who drives around in Lamborghini Diablos leaving skid marks all over the ozone. (BTW Jay Kay lived sort of near where I grew up and people I knew served him in petrol stations.)

OTOH I used to be obsessed with this song and have listened to it possibly 100 times. I don't really listen to the words, expect for amusement.

"Money's on the menu in my favourite restaurant" is one of the best lyrics penned since Wordsworth.

Barty, perhaps you're too young, but I'd assume you would give Jay Kay mad Snapchat props for shagging Denise Van Outen back in the day. (That hilariously autocorrected to "Van Buren", btw)

This thread can't help but be swathed in irony, sporting a raised eyebrow the size of a big furry hat, but I genuinely love all their big hits (afraid I've never dug deeper), and I imagine stuff like "Canned Heat" would be up there with Earth Wind and Fire in terms of getting all the generations dancing at the wedding reception. Perhaps given enough time the irony will evaporate, as it no doubt has from some of that old disco, and the Quai will finally be mentioned by cognoscenti musos without the sort of paparazzo smirk that my man JayKay routinely wiped off faces with a signet ring back in the early 00s.

I really hope he said this IRL

Despite Pharrell Williams declaring in a recent BBC interview “I can’t give this away but I’m a huge fan of Jamiroquai” it seems unlikely Jay Kay will ever be an acceptable name to drop.

Even Pharrell can't admit it without an apology - but the fact remains Pharrell loves the Quai, and Pharrell's opinion counts more than an NME journalist.
