You ever make a manhattan? Tradition calls for Rye, but here again my great uncle uses Bourbon instead. Personally I'm unable to appreciate the difference.

That said, when you switch out the only two components of a cocktail, it arguably ceases to be that cocktail.

edit: he keeps the Angostura though.
Help a limey out here. In 'American Pie', when the good ol' boys are drinking whiskey and rye - is "rye" not a type of whiskey in this context? Or is it something else?

Yes, but I don't know the distinction really. Pretty sure Bourbon is strictly from Kentucky, not sure if Rye is just a distinction based on ingredients, or if there is anything geographical designation there.

But why the two are named separately, whiskey and rye, might have something to do with the difference between whiskey and whisky. Pretty sure one of those is strictly from Scotland, or maybe Ireland.

I think whisky (no 'e') is either from Scotland, or from Japan, where they make whisky in a Scottish style. Wikipedia tells me it's also spelled like that in Canada (the old Commonwealth spelling, eh) although the Canadian stuff often has rye in it, which is unknown in Scotland.

So I guess whiskey-with-an-E is either Irish or American.

You're right about the spellings but rye is mostly American or Canadian and us to do with the ingredients

I'm drinking J&B because Castle in The a Human Factor drinks it. I'm eating ready salted crisps

It's just that the song makes it sound like "whisky and rye" is a drink in itself. I guess it's just because it fits the rhyme and meter.

He drinks J&B for its light colour, so the drinks he makes look weaker than they are. First impressions, it'll do.

I'm not a macho drinker. There's a nice thing in Adornos minima moralia where he is laughing at scotch and cigar men. Maybe I'll try and find it later. But I do drink spirits neat and I enjoy it as a rule.

As a mixological elitist I've been deterred by Long Island Iced Teas, but just last night someone explained them to me in a way that may have roused some trace of interest, that the kitchen-sink recipe actually manages to simulate the taste of iced tea somehow.

I've heard Freud was always drawing phallic conclusions about men lighting each others cigars and slobbering over them, so maybe its in line with that. The exclusive smoking clubs, again we have our ol' boys.
