Watched Saturday night. Isn't this movie now more sinister and scary than it was in the past because of all the mass shootings that have happened in the US?

To me it's now less a horror movie about AI gone mad, more about gun control. It gives me a frisson similar to Taxi Driver.

Not about roboticisation, but dehumanisation.

A former Congolese rebel leader has been found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Fighters loyal to Bosco Ntaganda disembowelled babies and smashed their heads in, said judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

In all, Ntaganda, nicknamed "Terminator", was convicted on 18 counts, including murder, rape, sexual slavery and using child soldiers.

Terminator isn't about the fear of a machine that acts like a human

It's about a human that acts like a machine

This was one of those posters I used to stare at before I was even able (or allowed) to watch Terminator.

The fertile zone of imagination between poster/videocase and actual viewing.

I gave my 10yo boy a choice of watching Terminator, Terminator 2 or Predator on Friday night while his mum was out.

He went for Shazam.

!! Terminator 2 is OK, but Predator and T1 are way to dark and/or gory for a 10 years old.

Interesting that even in that shot you can see how immaterial CGI effects are when compared to good old fashioned latex and blood packets.

A lot of the effects in Terminator 1 are laughably bad but I like how palpable they are TBH. That sort of trashy, scuzzy, sci-fi aesthetic of the 80s.

It's how you raise a man and not a bedwetter. Steady diet of video nasties from before they're old enough to spell their own name

Watching it reminded me of being a teenager and probably cheering on the terminator as he guns down a whole precinct's worth of cops. An insatiable lust for ultraviolence.

Also reminded me of playing stuff like Grand Theft Auto, loving the cartoony stereotypical gangstas. It's that weird interstice between childhood and adulthood, you still appreciate the vividly drawn caricature but you also want sex and violence.

I think your lad's just too young.

He hasn't the insatiable urge for ultraviolence yet.

He certainly has. He's been playing Fortnite & Overwatch and nagging us for Apex Legends all year.
But on the other hand, he is self-policing when it comes to scary shit. His mum's been chaperoning him while watching Stranger Things lately.

I'm not familiar with Overwatch but Fortnite isn't ultraviolence, it's TOO cartoony.

The real ultraviolence comes with Grand Theft Auto and Doom and the like. Arms torn off. Innocent civilians bleeding to death in the street. The first disbeliving swig of vodka.
