I'm 35 this weekend and it feels like I'm closing in on 40.

I remember my dad's fortieth birthday.

A lot of my friends now have kids. I'm not really jealous of having kids but it does feel a bit like they're doing what you should be doing at my age and I'm still living my same old life.

It struck me horribly the other day that I'm pretty much already at the extreme end of how old you should be going to certain nightclubs.

i've been realizing this week that my hair is getting thinner and thinner and that i'm slowly (yet also so quickly) getting bald. :(

I went bald in my late 20s but then it grew back. Although that was stress-induced alopecia rather than normal baldness.

BTW, shaven head + goatee = instant badass.

it's never a good look to cling on to your last hairs i think so i asked a good friend of mine yesterday she should tell me when i have to shave it all off. could've seen this coming though, my father has been bald for as long as i know him. i'm also thinking of maybe getting some sort of signature hat that would become part of my new character.

You don't want to rely on a hat cos then you risk disappointing people when you are forced into revealing the hat is hiding something. Like Ne-Yo. Craner, I was very disappointed you didn't have a Mario vs Ne Yo opinion. Very saddened.

Met a hairdresser a few weeks back who insisted shaving it off is not the way to go. He said just grow the top long and let a professional sort it. But there's that point where you just can't hide it anymore and it looks like your hair is a toupee put on in haste, tilted, slipping down the back of your head. Am in need of a trim, but due to reluctance to go to the barbers which is not something I enjoy, have been hatting it up and it's not as bad as I thought it would be

One of my best friends went bald a good five years ago and honestly I think he looks better. Needs a beard though or it's a bit too hairless a situation.

One of my other friends got alopecia and not only his head hair but eyebrow and face hair vanished. It was very disconcerting. He had some treatment and now he has eyebrows again.

You haven't described your baldness Yyaldrin. Are you receding from the front or are you going thin on top? If the latter I would instantly shave it now, all hair cuts and attempt to disguise it are terrible and make people laugh about it when you leave the room. But if it's just slowly going back from the front I think there is hope, ways and means of having short hair that still looks kinda cool.

40 is fuck all. It might appear as a threshold of sorts, but it’s a construct of our own making.

What could create this? Fertility dropping, a slight shift in your hair density &/or pigmentation, realising that if you were a bag of weed you’d probably already be looking to re-up (as a friend once put it)? So what. Exercise, try & eat as well as you can, self care really, it’s only a loss if you make it one. By 40 you’ve probably (hopefully) found the 3 or 4 things you’re hot on & that genuinely further your being. Could you say that as a younger person? Not categorically.

Time & tide frameworks are true, but so is evolving change. I hate pubs & avoid alcohol entirely these days, but as a yoot they were the fabric of every location ever lived in. Do I miss them? Yes/no. Is it shit when old haunts morph into a Tesco? Kinda. My deceased Dad would turn in his grave at that last statement. Pubs were a huge part of his life blood, but they aren’t the social networks they used to be. Fuckin Weatherspoons? Fuck off, if it’s going to be a pub then make it so there’s a decent pint of Guinness at room temperature, a reheated pie of dubious provenance & the time to drink myself into a stupor. Except that’s boring, untethered & usually involved violence.

Experienced knowing is better than scrambling round in the dark making mistakes, but that knowledge only evolves from repeated mistakes in the first instance. Take my wife (please) for instance. Could I have handled her at 25? That would’ve been brutal. Way too much honesty for a drug casualty & she would’ve dumped me pronto. Just wish I’d met her sooner. Do I miss drugs? God no. That brain crumbling out of your ears on Tues/Weds blue prison of headfuck, you can only really indulge it psychologically & psychologically as a younger person. It was fun while it lasted though. Just glad to have got this far when better people than myself are no longer here. People you’d actually want to go on a pub crawl with. A wise man once told me 45-60 is when it really gets weird on that front with people checking out all too frequently & he was right.

Do what you love, love those closest to you unconditionally & try & accept every day is a blessing. Didn’t really think that last bit through, but there you are now. Excuse the dribble.
