Anyone got anything they're particularly looking forward to? The trailer for The Lighthouse finally appeared the other week.

Not really but I'd welcome some tips. I didn't really enjoy The Witch much and that trailer didn't really grab me but a lighthouse is a great setting for a horror film so... I was telling my girlfriend about that Scottish island where the crew disappeared just the other day in fact and we read about it. Weird life to choose I always think. But so are many others I suppose.

The Safdies (Good Time) have a new one on the way with Adam Sandler in the lead as an NYC jeweler which sounds promising. He's quite good in serious roles and based on Good Time they could well do something interesting with it. OPN's back for the soundtrack too.

There's a new Malick film about Nazi Germany on the way but I dunno if I can be bothered. You know what you're gonna get, it's gonna be loads of woozy camera shots, close-ups on blades of grass with lens flare and whispered dialogue for two hours plus.

Joaquin Phoenix is doing some sort of Joker origin story aimed at 'mature' audiences which is being shown at Venice.

Midsommar just came out.

There's an Adam Driver thing about the CIA's post-9/11 torture program that could be decent.

Noah Baumbach has some new thing coming out on Netflix called Marriage Story.

Scorsese's got a new $200m gangster flick on the way on Netflix starring De Niro, Pesci, Keitel and Pacino.

Yeah I haven't seen Midsommar, The Dead Don't Die or In Fabric yet.
Agree with you about Malick, I've given up the hope of him doing anything even halfway decent ever again.00*0

I love Badlands, kind of like The Thin Red Line and have no clue what I think of The Tree of Life. The rest I haven't seen. Here's the new one:

I gotta say that that sounds incredibly boring and I made it through Tree of Life and Knight of Cups - well, just about, by end I was mainly reading and occasionally glancing at the screen to see if anything had happened.

OK I watched the trailer, it appears he has moved back towards kinda narrative films instead of three hours of pretty images. Thing is I normally like the latter but not when he does it somehow.

I like the trailer for the Malick thing, except I don't like that everybody's speaking English. Just seems wrong. He also uses that beautiful Gorecki symphony (I think?) which is basically a cheat code for emotional power.

Yeah I was thinking that, in the recent Chernobyl thing they had them speaking English but not in fake Russian accents. Seems like he's gone for that though - to me it's something you need to think about that but when you choose that solution it's arguably the worst of both worlds.

I like how Malick uses the camera to make you feel like you're entering/inside the world of the film. I suppose he uses handheld shots to achieve this. That was the stuff I liked most in Tree of Life.

Sometimes it works. I quite liked how they handled the accents in The Death of Stalin, Zhukov as a Yorkshireman. . . .

I think they did that in Chernobyl, different UK accents were kinda correlated with status or whatever but it wasn't entirely consistent and God knows how the Danish guy fitted in to that schema.

It'll be terrible. Wolf of wall st was one of the worst films ever made. Guy Ritchie level.

What's it about - The Irishman I mean. Of course I could look it up but it's more fun to talk about it no?
