Spike Milligan doing Hitler, Marty Feldman, Henny Youngman, Pete & Dud, Jerry Sadowitz live is a show & a half, Margaret Cho, Julia Davis, the entire cast of Psychobitches.

Comedy, stand up, people who are funny. Joey Diaz is the only J Rogan cognoscenti worth a gander imho, but his shtick can grate sometimes. Stanhope is solid. Missed loads from elsewhere.

Lol at those quotes in the op. Man

Eddie Pepitone is my current fave. The perfect commentator for our ongoing apocalypse. Theo Von is also great when you need a bit of light relief.

Have to wonder which comedians yyaldrin had in mind when he wrote those posts version quoted

Simon Pegg is not funny, but he gets paid for being funny, which he isn't.

Fuck Simon Pegg.

That 'nice' slightly hapless Englishman character they all play. Unpretentious, down to earth, normal middle class man. How many of those do we need? Why does it play so well?

The meek have gone to America found fame and fortune, acquired a creepy mid Atlantic accent and a brand new set of teeth

I'm watching him now, in a Mission Impossible film, playing opposite Tom Cruise. It's ridiculous. How did that happen? Who allowed it? From Emanuelle Beart to...fucking Simon Pegg.

Comedy has always had a cruel, misanthropic element. Whether it's Swift, Flaubert, Voltaire or Shakespeare. Nabokov thought Don Quixote was a very cruel book - and his own books are cruel - Lolita, for example, a very funny book in its own way.

I suppose the sense of self righteousness comedians feel is cousin to the role of the Fool in Shakespeare and elsewhere. The Fool has license to say things the nobles can't say, the price of which is they're never taken seriously. Which also helps explain the endless desperation you find in comedians to be taken seriously. They have to plead their case as serious artists because people instinctively mark down jokes as a lower form of art, a clever trick at best.

God this is astute.

Whenever I see a comment I made a year ago I think "wow, I was really firing on all cylinders back then".

I used to like Simon Pegg but now he has a transatlantic accent.

He's not playing the Emanuelle Beart role, tbf.

Watch any Joe Rogan podcast featuring a comedian and you'll hate comedians more than you even thought "that's entirely possible".

This is normally the point where they grow a beard and start doing comment pieces in the guardian or write themselves a leading role in some melancholic drama

Chris Morris & Jerry Sadowitz are the British pick from the last couple of decades. Sadowitz live is an animal, plus his sleight of hand card tricks add an almost carnivalesque irreverence to proceedings. It’s the only time he isn’t angry, you can feel his joy at the farce of it all. Then snap. Back into walkouts.

Chris Morris. It seemed for a short period he was one of the few able to cut Britain to the core & mustered a troupe of A-grade people to work with. If stable is an appropriate term, with hindsight that whole family was a bit of god send. Kevin Eldon, Patrick Marber, David Cann (the sex chat Dr in Jam), Julia Davis, list goes on. Probably repost, Hunderby & Camping are black-belt moves. If any of this overlaps with Simon Pegg, apologies. So much of this material seemed to coalesce as the 90’s curdled.
