this feels so unlike anything else coming out at the minute. confronted how primed I was to taking in pop as staged performance

I'm not a huge fan of his comedy but I think what he's done on Twitter has been important. Shook things up a bit.

The new fka twigs album epitomises this trend.

Kate Bushy. Very stagey. A bit corny. But also very OF THE MINUTE production.

I quite like it.

Also when thinking about the "dark" "moody" pop and rnb, it's relevant to consider movies and TV that are popular ATM - Christopher Nolan, David Fincher, True Detective, (even Game of Thrones?).

High definition textures, "cold" filters, dark shadows, psychic unease, paranoia. James Bond becomes a therapy case. Some of those BBC dramas are like this too -The Bodyguard, The Night Manager. IdleRich's thread about Lynne Ramsay made me think of this.

Some threads in this thread that I dropped but are still intriguing to me, at least

Big fan of the xcx and CATQ tune in the original post. Saw them both perform it in Brixton O2 last year, Christine is a good dancer.

Also, if there is an ironic aspect to the more upbeat pop music now, that's of a piece with the moodier stuff insofar as its no longer "innocent".

Amazing post, big man, and relevant to that dua lipa tune

Not dark but an "edge". A little bit gritty, like a Saturday evening BBC cop drama.

Yes I was just about to stay, sound objects. Sculptures in artificial space. That’s something I sense in a lot of new pop. A very polished rich mix that fills up the spectrum and gives a sense of tactile music with fat sexual curves and contrasted textures

a friend of mine introduced me to christine and the queens some time ago and i thought it was very well performed pop music. some of the dancers reminded me of michael jackson's thriller videoclip.
