Cartoon Physics/The Revenge of the Tangible

boogie has squelch bass the prefigures 303 acid squelch

one of the key sonic differences marking the transition from 70s funk to 80s boogie is the bass going from rubbery, popping to gluey, squelch

this is more proto-boogie but the bass sounds onomatopoetically like a cartoon characters eyes popping out of their head in surprise

Freestyle electrofunk and by no means the best (though must have sounded huge at the music box) shannon let the music play has a bassline that is essentially acid. I don't mean in the synth used although that sounds analogous, but it's literally staccato like a coiling acid house riff.

this is actually what i meant by nuum dance music being implicitly theoretical. the way those breaks triplet double tap induces heart palpitation paranoia. It's always intrigued me, how you can use the rhythmic momentum, as opposed to the voice or the melodies (melodies the most boring of all for me personally) to create vivid flashbacks of certain sensations. I think that in itself is conceptual, but more in a senius avantyob way, not invented by one individual but discovered through fucking about. I still think this is possible, just requires what bassbeyondreason dubbed 'hardcore eclecticism'

It's more the cartoon aspect. I was older than you are now when I first heard them so if you listen to them now you then become less urban than me, mathematically speaking

This thread is a reminder that music goes beyond the body. That it posits a future body and a future physics. The physics of outer space and other planets. That we are not subject to the usual earthbound restraints within these worlds. Time can run in two directions at once. We ourselves are capable of bilocation. Astral travel. Are multi-limbed and each limb jointed and articulated at several points. This is the real science of evolution. The dream precedes the flesh.

very good point.

Metal of course is quite big on the whole goblin voice. but its a cartoon physics i can't necessarily jell with because the best stuff sounds like childhood horror ghosts (fantastic) and then the pantomime goblins come in. once again that ying yang.

New Jersey club is full of cartoonishness as well - there was a time when nearly every track sampled spongebob squarepants, and they all used that squeaky bedspring sample that comes from here apparently

That daft booiiing sample in this (like the sound of your teeth ricocheting off the gristle in a Gregg's steak bake) saves this from being another po faced breakbeat garage track and turns into something fun.

big choon this, an all time fave. Might drop a Harry Lime joint in my next mix.
