They do all kinds of different chips here... I like the ones you get sometimes where they are very thin discs just a bit thicker than crisps.

The other day there was a pack of pork on sale - I guess that with the addition of some cabbage and a couple of other bits and bogs it would form a classic Portuguese stew called cozido - it had a load of chops and some chorizo sausages and steaks and so on, plus a couple of huge bones with meat hanging off them... and also a couple of ears and a trotter. It was an amazing deal, I didn't particularly want the ears and trotter strangely enough but the pack was so cheap that they effectively had a negative price, probably quite a large negative price in fact. So over the last couple of weeks we have been slowly and steadily eating our way through a large proportion of a pig until all that remained, staring up reproachfully at us from the packet was an enormous pair of ears and a huge gnarly foot.

So the day before yesterday we just started simmering everything that remained for hours and hours to make it tender enough to eat. Liza pulled off the hairiest bits and just let all the gelatinous fat form a stock which, when we deemed it was ready, we used as the basis for a soup (to be specific, our take on a Russian soup called rassolnik). Chucked in a load of veg, pearl barley and some bacon/lardons that we hacked out of some cured Portuguese pork etc then a load of pickled gherkins along with - and this is most important - their juice for sharpness to cut through the richness. And - as with all Russian soups - we served it with sour cream. And it looked like this

That actually sounds alright. But you've omitted the crucial element of telling us whether it was any good.

I just had a highly experimental sandwich for lunch. Toasted wholemeal bread enclosing smoked streaky bacon and cooked apple, with a dash of chipotle chili sauce.

Tasted like fireworks. A revelation.

Chopped, then fried in butter, then sugar and water added, with some cinnamon.

So whatever you call that cooking method.

Today I ate crumpet with butter and marmite, 20 chicken mcnuggets from McDonald's (shared), some wasabi peas, some Yorkshire mixture sweets, lamb samosa from the corner shop, reheated chicken curry with rice. And now considering having a pork pie, or portion of pork pie. What's stopping me is the palaver of getting the cheese and pickled onions out as well.
