I don't fight, I run away
late to this but had to point this out for some reason reading this
at a certain point i got really, really sick of feeling 'drenched with queer melancholy' and music designed to make me feel that way. it's not just midtown 120 blues. it's sky limousine, as well. it's screwtapes. it's actress.
it's the button pushing thing. the set-up zones.
linking this back to 'zone of fruitless restraint' and 'the hypnagogic illusion': 'drenched in queer melancholy'.

Fair enough. But I don't hear Terre's music as being designed to make me feel anything or to push buttons. It just is full of queer melancholy, because that's where Terre is coming from, and it's something I very much relate to. I don't get that feeling with Actress (who's straight anyway I think). Sky Limousine or Screwtapes I've never heard.

Dunno about actress being straight or not and frankly I don't care but there was a debate a few months ago on twitter i think about asking black techno producers from the 313 about their sexuality and I was like no, this is a terrible way of relating to queerness, as if it's some parity chart. not to mention the sociopolitical ramifications of being openly queer as a black and brown person in the states. not everyone has to disclose that.

Yeah, not buying this idea of Terre being some calculated, Pavlovian artist. She's real, yo.

I mean I don't care much/am bored by the real/not real debate I think technology outmoded that debate and I tend to celebrate amateur musicians over proper musicians sometimes (although my house heroes are mostly proper musicians so idk...)

but was listening to a mike huckaby mix and it dawned on me why I like a certain type of deep house over another.

Dling. What's the reason?

the way he mixes basic channels dub techno into the end of an hour of deep house really made me realise back when this was first around in 2012 or whatever how much the bassline makes it for me in house. the straight to the point kick and the bassline and everything goes on top of that. when the bassline is too muted or not the main focus i tend to just want garage house with low basslines.

Terre's the real deal, for sure. Although it of course makes no sense to say that. But, even you are very sceptical about the whole post-structuralist Foucauldian theoretics underlying it (and of course you should, especially if you have been on a Jordan Peterson trip like me for the last few years), even then it still holds up. Conceptronica that works whatever your background is. Melancholy trancends that, lucikly.

I've been a fan for years, but didn't like the ambient stuff at first, untill I heard the "Live at Calgary" set floating around for free. This is really something special and it's hard to return to trad ambient stuff after that.

Kami-Sakunobe is great as well, so is "Lovebomb" with a most excellent Mark Fell colab secret track included.

But the whole RA/FACT etc embracing of it because of political reasons drives me nuts. S/He (She? everyone is using she I guess) is more subtle in its execution to be subject to that.

Anyways the real 'concept' album that uses soul/funk samples in a completely original sense in a house techno context is the Soul Center II release. Everything he does is conceptual in the best sense:

Think you missed my point there. those records would be played around 130-135 bpm, hard and fast by house standards, loads of crossfader cuts, just listen to any gemini set from the late 90s. Same with DJ Sneak. very bumpy and to the point. it's not european techno is it, it isn't going to go that fast!

Had a rethink on this and it's fuckin right on. Yeah I love classy 120-125 deepness. But man, just started putting the tempos up in all my tunes to 130/132. Major improvement in drive, energy and vibe. Old choons that were boringly plodding along are now choo chooing their way along the tracks full of zest and powa! Tnx, third.

13 beats per second. Had that effect on ketamine. Everyone sounded like wookies with problems - “c-c-c-aa-aan-n-n-n iiiii b-b-b-u-mmm-mmmm-mmmmm a fffffffaa-aaaaa-aaaaaaa-aaaaaaa-g?”. Something like that.
