edit: I only became aware of Simon Raven due to @IdleRich but I am forever indebted for the recommendation, the Alms For Oblivion cycle is up there with the best that Britain can offer when it comes to literature, a perfect amalgamation of sleaze and upper class snobbery

Yes he is/was a cliche, foul-mouthed, dirty, possible mythomaniac but out of all the pseudo comedy which has spewed out of the realms JD touched on and its fuckhead stand-up narcissists, his story telling was pure east coast seasoning. Finding your mother dead while tripping? Addicted to everything including xanax, yet conversely some of the rarest and more unique takes on life inside the great American nightmare
