Hilariously Skrillix turned out to be both the most successful and the most musically gifted of all the dubstep producers. America saved dubstep by making it outsized, idiotic, vulgar, widescreen, technicolour. But I haven't actually heard any of the music. This is a conceptual opinion. What have I missed?

This is a masterpiece. Very Timbaland influenced but so much cleaner and louder and modern.

One of those moments when the mainstream comprehensively outstrips the underground on its own terms. More extreme, more intense, more nuttier, more sugar, more energy drink.

It reminds me of what I was saying about Marvel films with gratuitously shot scenes in major foreign markets. Maximise global reach. the music is very Marvel too. State of the art computer illusions. Very shining maximum impact.

Barty posted this in the 2010s thread.

"I remember playing minecraft while my mom would cook dinner listening to this ; )"

This is an intelligent thing I said to Barty

The beiber one is amazing. He works best with delicate girly voices like that. Macho voices make the whole thing very unappealing. Spoilt American teenager energy. Fuck you mom.

Interesting to see how emotionally resonant this is for people in the comments. Sound of a generation.

This is so bland, it's like the soundtrack to one of those videos where a yank backpacks around the Andes and does their own drone shots

I applaud the conceptual impetus of this thread but I can't actually stand the music.

Where R U Now is amazing, of course. I hate to say it cos Diplo was involved. Like bigging up a Gary Glitter choon.

I KIND OF get what you mean re it being more technicolour and "nutty" than dubstep "proper" but otoh it isn't REALLY nutty, it's a squares impersonation of a nutbag, it's redolent of frat bros doing jello shots and poking their tongues out for the crash zoom (out). X Factor meets Harmony Korine.

It's actually all twinkly and sweet, as you say like sugar drinks.

You'd never admit to liking Coki ofc but Coki is basically this music but genuinely a bit unhinged and offensive. Also he did it first.

Coki is a drab monochrome version with doctor who special effects. This is high definition Hollywood product. The real thing.

Actually listening to Coki tunes they aren't like this much

They don't induce in me an urge to drink mountain dew e.g.

You still want to eat groats for breakfast and have dirt under your fingernails, that's your problem. You don't want to live in the wipe-clean modern world.

You can't actually like this though right?

Your principles must have limits

I actually think with this stuff it's exactly as with jam city and Sophie and all those in that the music is good when it's tethered to pop/RNB songwriting.

Like where R U now and kelela songs. Otherwise they're just wanking with plugins.

I say this cos as you know I like Carly Rae Jepsen tunes. And I like how hypermodern they sound.

That's why I'm with you in theory on this but not in practice.

Who did Bieber "sorry"? Cos that's also a banger

It's an amazing song. Don't understand why you don't like it. It's vocal science taken to its most highly developed pitch.
